English Abstract
This research investigates the readability and comprehensibility of translated Patient Information Leaflets (PILs) in Iran. Employing a mixed-methods approach, it quantitatively compared 11 English PILs and their Persian translations using the Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Dayani formulas. The findings revealed a significant statistical difference, with Persian translations scoring higher in readability, suggesting superficial ease of reading. However, qualitative expert evaluations based on the POCA modelʹs linguistic criteria identified major comprehensibility issues. These included unexplained technical terminology, complex sentence structures, and content ambiguity. Semi-structured interviews with laypersons confirmed these problems, reporting confusion, anxiety, and difficulty understanding the leaflets. The study concludes that while translated PILs may appear more readable, they often fail to achieve genuine lay-friendliness. This highlights the limitations of relying solely on readability formulas. It advocates for a user-centered translation approach and recommends developing national guidelines. The research underscores the need for a paradigm shift in medical translation pedagogy towards audience awareness and plain language principles.
FarsiAbstract
