English Abstract
Allusions are one of the culturally loaded and intertextual elements in films, which makes their translation difficult and challenging because of some linguistic, temporal, spatial and cultural constraints. This study aims to investigate the subtitling strategies employed in rendering allusions in Persian subtitles of English audiovisual content and compare the performance of human translators with translations generated by ChatGPT using two different prompts. The design of the study is descriptive and corpus-based. The corpus of the research consists of nine movies from various genres, including drama and science fiction, as well as one episode of the series Fargo. Proper name and key phrase allusions were identified and analyzed based on Leppihalme’s (1997) model. The allusions were also translated by ChatGPT using two different prompts and they were compared with the original subtitles. The findings indicated that retention was the predominant strategy for translating proper name allusions. For rendering key phrase allusions, the predominant strategy was literal translation. However, human translators showed greater diversity in the strategies used for translating these culturally embedded meanings than translations produced by ChatGPT. The results also suggested that the translations produced by the detailed prompt employed a wider range of translation strategies, although these differences in the employed strategies were relatively small and literal translation remained the dominant strategy in the translation of allusions. This study highlights the rule of prompt design in the strategies used to translate allusions. The findings contribute to audiovisual translation research and provide useful insights for translators and the development of AI tools.
FarsiAbstract
