English Abstract
Psychological factors play a crucial role in shaping learners’ experiences and outcomes in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. Understanding how these factors influence language learning is essential for creating supportive environments that foster persistence, engagement, and achievement. This study was an attempt to explore the role of perfectionism, locus of control, and grit in the experiences of Iranian EFL learners. Moreover, this study investigated learners’ lived experiences of these psychological factors and how they influenced their language-learning journeys. To this end, the study was conducted within a social constructivist framework and employed a qualitative design. Data were collected through interviews and weekly reflective log sheets from the participants. The findings revealed that perfectionism and locus of control were deeply intertwined with the development of grit in EFL learning. Adaptive perfectionism and an internal locus of control generally promoted sustained interest and effort; however, rigid high standards and excessive self-blame could undermine both interest and effort. The results also showed that learners’ experiences of these constructs were complex, dynamic, and shaped by their language-learning contexts. In addition, the findings underscored the importance of psychological dimensions in EFL learning and highlighted the need for teachers and educators to recognize the individual differences that shape learners’ engagement and perseverance. By fostering supportive learning environments that encourage adaptive beliefs and resilient behavior, language programs can better support learners’ academic growth and long-term success.
