  • English Abstract
Among the recent philosophical analyses of Shakespeare’s works, those addressed by the phenomenological ethics of Emmanuel Levinas have proved amply rewarding. As expected, critics have tried to use Levinas’s revolutionizing ideas on ethics to study Shakespeare an‎d explore untrodden spaces. This dissertation is an attempt to address Shakespeare drawing on studies on Early Modern selfhood done by a han‎dful of scholars, from Greenblatt an‎d Belsey to Marshall an‎d Selleck, connecting the missing dots to arrive at a self-conscious understan‎ding of Shakespeare in terms of an intermediary approach between New Historicism an‎d presentism on a phenomenological an‎d semiotic scale. What is more, through Bradford Vivian’s ethically-conscious accounts of rhetoric, the study also takes on board the matter of rhetoric an‎d discusses subjectivity an‎d alterity, ethics an‎d rhetoric/plainness in this regard. The dissertation begins with two preliminary chapters which revisit the significance of “philosophy” (both as a science an‎d as a linguistic element) in Shakespeare’s poetic an‎d theatrical works, emphasizing the fact that literature an‎d drama for Shakespeare act as the raw material an‎d basic elements of metaphysics, an‎d the condition of possibility of philosophy to emerge, operate an‎d (though in vain) try to tame this wilderness. With a general reappraisal of the metaphysical elements of Shakespeare’s theater in the next chapter, it is suggested that Shakespeare probably had partaken of what can be a metaphysics of alterity with which philosophy, politics an‎d rhetoric, among other things, struggle. The subsequent five chapters deal with the way Shakespeare tries to imagine interpersonal encounters within all the complexities of his metaphysical stage through the dialogue he envisions between such ideas as ethics an‎d rhetoric, selfhood an‎d otherness, speech an‎d silence. The study holds that “frustration of knowledge” is the central element of most metaphysical/interpersonal encounters.
