English Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction patterns of classroom discourse like turn-taking patterns, question and answering chains, non-verbal interaction features of male and female Iraqi EFL teachers in public preparatory schools and in private institutes. For this purpose, 10 male and 10 female EFL teachers from public preparatory schools and 10 male and 10 female EFL teachers from private language institutes and their students in Muthana, Iraq, were selected based on convenience sampling. Each classroom was observed for at least two to four sessions and the sample of the study comprised 20 sessions of forty-five-minute recordings from the high schools and 20 sessions of forty-five-minute recordings from the private language institutes. Teachers’ interaction and turn-taking patterns were investigated using Sinclair and Coulthard (1975)’s model comprising a teacher Initiation, a student Response, and a teacher Feedback, known as IRF or Initiation, Response, and Feedback/evaluation. The participants were also interviewed to understand the perceptions of interactions. The results indicated significant differences between public and private schools in interaction features. In public preparatory schools, both male and female teachers demonstrated higher rates of IRF sequences, supporting Naserʹs (2013) observation regarding teacher-centered interactions in Iraqi public preparatory schools. This observation also supported Walshʹs (2011) findings regarding the dominance of traditional discourse structures in various EFL contexts in Iraq. Findings have important implications for EFL teachers regarding classroom interaction patterns in Iraq EFL teaching settings.
FarsiAbstract
