Animation an‎d Teaching English to Young EFL Learners: Learners’, Teachers’, an‎d Parents’ Attitudes in Focus

Abstract This qualitative study aimed to investigate the attitudes of young Iranian EFL learners toward English animations, as well as the attitudes of EFL teachers an‎d parents toward using animations for teaching English to YLLs. This study also aimed to investigate Iranian EFL teachers an‎d parents’ opinions about the positive an‎d negative points of using English animation for YLLs. To this end, the required data was collected through conducting semi-structured interviews. Next, using qualitative content analysis, the collected responses were analyzed to identify specific codes an‎d the frequency of each derived code was calculated. The findings showed that content that is morally meaningful, energetic, an‎d having heroic theme play a prominent role in shaping young Iranian EFL learners’ positive perception of the viewed animations. On the other han‎d, depiction of negative family interactions was identified as the most prominent aspect of the viewed animations disliked by these learners. The findings of this research also showed that both Iranian EFL teachers an‎d mothers approved of using animations for teaching English to YLLs. According to the results, Iranian EFL teachers’ positive attitudes were predominantly influenced by perceived essential role animations play in teaching English to YLLs, as well as the support they provide for the teaching process. However, Iranian mothers’ positive attitudes were found to be predominantly influenced by observable language learning outcomes in YLLs, particularly developing an‎d improving their speaking skill. In addition, according to the results, developing speaking skill, the influence of Western culture, an‎d delaying L1 development were identified as the most prominent positive an‎d negative points of using English animations for young Iranian EFL learners. The findings of this research offer important implications for EFL teachers, parents, curriculum designers, an‎d animations producers. چكيده هدف اين مطالعه كيفي بررسي ديدگاه‌‌هاي زبان‌آموزان كودك ايراني در مورد انيميشن‌هاي انگليسي و همچنين بررسي ديدگاه‌هاي معلمان زبان و والدين در مورد استفاده از انيميشن‌ براي آموزش زبان انگليسي به زبان¬آموزان كودك مي‌باشد. هدف ديگر اين مطالعه بررسي نظرات معلمان زبان و والدين ايراني در مورد نكات مثبت و منفي استفاده از انيميشن‌هاي انگليسي‌ براي زبان¬آموزان كودك مي‌باشد. داده‌هاي مورد نياز براي اين منظور از طريق انجام مصاحبه‌هاي نيمه ساختار يافته جمع‌آوري گرديد. درگام بعد، با استفاده از روش تحليل محتواي كيفي، پاسخ‌هاي جمع‌آوري شده از جهت وجود كدهاي خاص بررسي و فراواني تك تك كدهاي به دست آمده محاسبه گرديد. يافته‌هاي به دست آمده نشان داد كه محتواهاي معني‌دار به لحاظ اخلاقي،پويا، و با مضمون قهرمانانه نقش برجسته‌اي در شكل‌گيري ديدگاه مثبت زبان¬آموزان كودك ايراني نسبت به انيميشن‌هاي انگليسي ايفا مي‌كنند. از سوي ديگر، به تصويركشيدن تعاملات خانوادگي منفي به عنوان برجسته‌ترين جنبه‌ ناخوشايند انيميشن‌هاي تماشا شده توسط اين زبان¬آموزان شناسايي گرديد. نتايج اين تحقيق همچنين نشان داد كه هر دو گروه از معلمان زبان و مادران ايراني نظر مثبتي در مورد استفاده از انيميشن‌ براي آموزش زبان انگليسي به زبان¬آموزان كودك دارند. طبق نتايج، نظر مثبت معلمان زبان انگليسي عمده تحت تاثير نقش ضروري درك شده آنها در امر آموزش زبان به كودكان و همچنين كمك آنها به امر تدريس است. ولي نظر مثبت مادران عمده تحت تاثير نتايج قابل مشاهده مرتبط با يادگيري زبان در كودكان، ويژه رشد و تقويت مهارت صحبت كردن آنها مي‌باشد. به علاوه، طبق نتايج به دست آمده، رشد مهارت صحبت‌كردن، تاثير فرهنگ غرب، و تاخير در رشد زبان مادري به عنوان برجسته‌ترين نكات مثبت و منفي استفاده از انيميشن‌هاي انگليسي براي زبان¬آموزان كودك ايراني شناسايي شدند. يافته‌هاي اين مطالعه مي‌تواند كاربردهاي مهمي براي معلمان زبان انگليسي، والدين، برنامه‌ريزان درسي، و تهيه كنند‌گان انيميشن‌ها داشته باشد. كليدواژه‌ها: انيميشن، معلمان زبان انگليسي، تحقيق كيفي، زبان‌آموزان كودك
