English Abstract
The present study examined the influence of AI-generated effort praise, presented both in written and aural modalities, on feedback engagement, L2 grit, and English writing proficiency of upper-intermediate L2 learners to fill the gaps in the application of AI technology to language learning. The quasi-experimental design was utilized to conduct the study. The 60 participants were assigned to three groups of written AI-generated effort praise with corrective feedback, aural AI-generated effort praise with corrective feedback, and a control group with corrective feedback only who were tested over eight weeks using pre- and post-measures of grit (consistency, perseverance), multidimensional feedback engagement (behavioral, cognitive, social, emotional), and IELTS Task 2 Writing criteria. Results indicated that written praise has led to no significant grit improvements, limited drop in cognitive engagement, but significant writing progress in task response, coherence, and lexical resource. However, aural praise significantly enhanced all variables, including grit, all engagement dimensions, and all writing criteria. Between-group analyses confirmed that aural praise had superiority over written and control conditions, with written praise outperforming the control in writing aspects. In conclusion, aural AI-generated effort praise is a powerful tool for enhancing grit, feedback engagement, and writing proficiency in L2 settings. The study encourages its adoption in L2 setting contexts and suggests future research into longitudinal effects and diverse learner groups. The findings suggest that AI tools can play a powerful role in language learning, so teachers, policymakers, and developers should work together to integrate such feedback into classrooms to build students’ confidence, engagement, and equal access to quality education.
