  • English Abstract
    The present study examined the influence of AI-generated effort praise, presented both in written an‎d aural modalities, on feedback engagement, L2 grit, an‎d English writing proficiency of upper-intermediate L2 learners to fill the gaps in the application of AI technology to language learning. The quasi-experimental design was utilized to conduct the study. The 60 participants were assigned to three groups of written AI-generated effort praise with corrective feedback, aural AI-generated effort praise with corrective feedback, an‎d a control group with corrective feedback only who were tested over eight weeks using pre- an‎d post-measures of grit (consistency, perseverance), multidimensional feedback engagement (behavioral, cognitive, social, emotional), an‎d IELTS Task 2 Writing criteria. Results indicated that written praise has led to no significant grit improvements, limited dro‎p in cognitive engagement, but significant writing progress in task response, coherence, an‎d lexical resource. However, aural praise significantly enhanced all variables, including grit, all engagement dimensions, an‎d all writing criteria. Between-group analyses confirmed that aural praise had superiority over written an‎d control conditions, with written praise outperforming the control in writing aspects. In conclusion, aural AI-generated effort praise is a powerful tool for enhancing grit, feedback engagement, an‎d writing proficiency in L2 settings. The study encourages its adoption in L2 setting contexts an‎d suggests future research into longitudinal effects an‎d diverse learner groups. The findings suggest that AI tools can play a powerful role in language learning, so teachers, policymakers, an‎d developers should work together to integrate such feedback into classrooms to build students’ confidence, engagement, an‎d equal access to quality education.
