Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House (1879) an‎d Caryl Churchill’s Cloud 9 (1979) are lan‎dmark works in the history of dramatic literature, both challenging the societal norms of their respective periods through the lens of gender roles. Ibsenʹs play is a pioneering feminist text, critiquing the patriarchal structures that confine women to traditional roles, while Churchill’s Cloud 9 confronts the fluidity of gender an‎d sexuality in the context of late 20th-century Britain. This thesis presents a comparative analysis of these two plays through the lens of Lacanian psychoanalysis, aiming to uncover how language both perpetuates an‎d resists gender essentialism. By examining the plays within their respective cultural an‎d historical contexts, this study investigates how linguistic strategies inform identity formation, revealing the socio-cultural mechanisms that shape—an‎d are shaped by—gendered discourse. A Doll’s House an‎d Cloud 9 are explored as key texts that illustrate a century-long shift from implicit resistance to open defiance against rigid gender norms in dramatic literature. The study employs a linguistic psychoanalytic approach, integrating close textual reading with Lacanian concepts such as the Symbolic Order, the Mirror Stage, an‎d the Real. This framework facilitates an in-depth examination of how characters utilize linguistic deferral—ranging from subtle negotiation to overt rebellion—to navigate an‎d subvert societal expectations. The findings indicate that while A Doll’s House showcases more covert linguistic subversions by its characters, Cloud 9 amplifies these strategies into explicit an‎d playful confrontations of suppressive societal structures. In both works, language emerges as a potent site for exposing an‎d dismantling fixed gender roles, challenging the notion of biologically determined identity. By comparing these plays, the thesis underscores the evolution of linguistic deferral as a tool of social critique, demonstrating that dramatic literature not only mirrors cultural attitudes but actively shapes public discourse on gender. This trajectory—from Ibsen’s measured defiance to Churchill’s radical disruptions—attests to the transformative potential of language in promoting individual subjectivity an‎d broader social change. Ultimately, the study reaffirms that gender essentialism is an arbitrary construct negotiated through language, emphasizing the enduring relevance of both Ibsen an‎d Churchill’s works in contemporary gender studies.

اين پايان‌نامه با استفاده از رويكرد روانكاوي لكاني، به مطالعه تطبيقي نمايشنامه‌هاي خانه عروسكي اثر هنريك ايبسن و روي ابرها اثر كاريل چرچيل پرداخته، با هدف نشان دادن اينكه چگونه استفاده از زبان و ساختارهاي زباني، هم در تثبيت و هم در مقاومت در برابر ذات‌گرايي جنسيتي نقشي اثر گذار ايفا مي‌كند. با استفاده از قرار دادن اين دو اثر در بستر فرهنگيِ ويژه‌ي هر كدام، پژوهش حاضر بررسي در هم مي‌آميزد، مي‌كند كه چگونه راهبردهاي زباني در شكل‌گيري هويت مؤثر بوده و سازوكارهاي اجتماعي-فرهنگي مرتبط با گفتمان جنسيتي را آشكار مي‌سازد؛ سازوكارهايي كه در عين تأثيرگذاري بر گفتمان جنسيتي، خود نيز از آن تأثير مي‌پذيرند. خانه عروسكي و روي ابرها به عنوان دو اثر كليدي معرفي مي‌شوند كه در طي يك قرن از ادبيات دراماتيك، گذر از مقاومت ضمني به مخالفت آشكار در برابر هنجارهاي سخت‌گيرانه‌ي جنسيتي را به تصوير مي‌كشند. اين مطالعه با اتخاذ يك رويكرد روانكاوانه و با تمركز بر ساحت زباني، مفاهيم لكاني‌اي همچون «امر نمادين»، «مرحله‌ي آينه‌اي»، «امر خيالي» و «امر واقع» را با بررسي زبان‌شناختي تا نشان دهد شخصيت‌ها چگونه با توسل به شگردهاي «تعويق زباني»— از چانه‌زني‌هاي ظريف گرفته تا شورش‌هاي آشكار—با انتظارات اجتماعي مواجه مي‌شوند يا در برابر آن مي‌ايستند. يافته‌هاي اين مطالعه حاكي از آن است كه در ميان شخصيت‌هاي خانه عروسكي، شيوه‌هاي زيركانه‌تر و نهان‌تري از اختلال در گفتمان غالب ديده مي‌شود، در حالي كه روي ابرها اين راهبردها را به تقابل‌هاي صريح‌تر و نيز حتي طنزآميز با ساختارهاي زبانيِ سركوبگر اجتماعي ارتقا مي‌دهد. در هر دو اثر، زبان به مثابه بستري نيرومند براي برملا ساختن و فروپاشي نقش‌هاي جنسيتي تثبيت‌شده ظاهر مي‌شود و بدين‌ترتيب، تصور هويت زيستيِ از پيش تعيين‌شده را به چالش مي‌كشد. مقايسه‌ي اين دو نمايشنامه نشان مي‌دهد كه چگونه «تعويق زباني» به ابزاري براي نقد اجتماعي تبديل شده است؛ بدين معنا كه ادبيات نمايشي نه تنها انعكاس‌دهنده‌ي نگرش‌هاي فرهنگي موجود است، بلكه گفتمان عمومي جنسيت را نيز فعالانه شكل مي‌دهد. اين سير تحول— از چالش‌هاي كنترل‌شده‌ي ايبسن تا برهم‌ريزي‌هاي راديكال چرچيل— ظرفيت دگرگون‌ساز زبان را در گسترش سوژگي فردي و دگرگوني اجتماعي برجسته مي‌سازد. در نهايت، پژوهش حاضر مجدداً تأييد مي‌كند كه ذات‌گرايي جنسيتي، سازه‌اي دلبخواهي است كه از رهگذر زبان به مذاكره گذاشته مي‌شود، و بدين طريق، بر اهميت پايدار هر دو اثر ايبسن و چرچيل در مطالعات جنسيتي معاصر مهر تأييد مي‌زند.
