There are two styles of poetry in English an‎d Persian literature that bear striking similarities to one another, the Metaphysical poetry an‎d the Indian style; they were both at the beginning of their modern societies an‎d at the end of a literary tradition, faced with clichéd an‎d overused themes an‎d motifs. They thus had to use the conventions an‎d metaphors so esoterically an‎d abstrusely that they have been harshly criticized by their posterities. The present study shows the literary an‎d historic similarities an‎d differences between the two an‎d explains how they employ metaphoric language an‎d how far they depart from everyday speech. To do so, first a socio-historic account of each style an‎d their reception is provided. Then, the leading representatives of the two styles, John Donne an‎d Bedil Dehlavi, have been selec‎ted, an‎d Conceptual Metaphor Theory, laid out by Lakoff an‎d Johnson, is applied to some of their poems to, first, indicate how they use cognitive mapping to arrive at the metaphors they construct, an‎d, second, to analyze how they use the unused parts of the structural metaphors an‎d combine them to construct far-fetched conceits in sharp contrast with the traditional metaphors an‎d conventions of their own time. This study concludes that though the two compared bodies of poetry are both particularly cerebral, Donne’s poetry is more concrete, emotional, an‎d in terms of CMT, more experiential-based, whereas Bedil’s poetry is more abstract an‎d philosophical with a firm footing in experiential gestalt an‎d embodied experiences.

دو سبك در ادبيات فارسي و انگليسي مشابهت‌هاي قابل توجهي با هم دارند، سبك هندي و شعر متافيزيكي. هر دو در ابتداي شروع مدرنيسم در جامعه‌ي خود و نيز در انتهاي يك سنت ادبي قرار داشتند لذا با مضامين و بن‌مايه‌هاي قالبي و نخ‌نما شده‌اي روبرو بودند كه مجبور شدند استعاره‌ها و سنت‌هاي ادبي را چنان غامض و بغرنج به كار ببرند و در نتيجه به شدت مورد انتقاد پسينيان خود قرار گرفتند. اين مطالعه نشان مي‌دهد مشابهت‌ها و تفاوت‌هاي تاريخي و ادبي اين دو سبك چيست و روشن مي‌سازد كاربرد زبان استعاري در اشعار آن‌ها چگونه است و فاصله گرفتن آن‌ها از زبان روزمره به چه ميزان است. بدين منظور در ابتدا شرحي تاريخي-اجتماعي از هر يك از سبك‌ها و پذيرش آن‌ها در جامعه ادبي داده مي‌شود. سپس، نظريه استعاره مفهومي، در نظريه‌پردازي ليكاف و جانسون، بر روي اشعاري از دو نماينده تمام‌عيار اين دو سبك، جان دان و بيدل دهلوي، به كار برده مي‌شود تا نخست مشخص شود اين دو چگونه نگاشت مفهومي را به كار مي‌گيرند تا به استعاره‌هاي ساخت خود دست پيدا كنند و سپس، آنها چگونه جنبه‌هاي استفاده نشده استعاره‌هاي ساختاري را به كار مي‌گيرند و آنها را تركيب مي‌كنند تا استعاره‌هاي دور از ذهني بسازند كه در تمايز آشكار با استعاره‌هاي سنتي و رسوم ادبي زمان خويش‌اند. ساين تحقيق نتيجه مي‌گيرد كه اين دو سبك شعري ذهني‌تر و انديشگاني‌تر از ديگر سبك‌ها مي‌باشند؛ شعر جان دان عيني‌تر، عاطفي‌تر و به اصطلاح نظريه استعاره مفهومي بيشتر بر مبناي تجربه قرار دارد، درحالي كه شعر بيدل انتزاعي‌تر، ذهني‌تر، و فلسفي‌تر و در عين حال مبتني بر گشتالت تجربي و تجربه‌هاي جسمي است.
