Martin McDonagh’s theatre an‎d films depict the dark version of the contemporary scene which is filled with violence an‎d ambiguity. In weaving these two elements, McDonagh’s characters display emotional responses that illuminate hidden passional agency. This thesis delves into the affective resonance of McDonagh’s dramatic characterization through an integrated framework of Sianne Ngai an‎d Sara Ahmed’s theories of emotions. Employing Affect Theory, the present study dives deep into the emotional mechanism of mainly three plays in question, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Pillowman, an‎d A Behan‎ding in Spokane. By examining McDonagh’s affective storytelling an‎d the characters’ affective states, this thesis reveals the intricacies an‎d deficiency of the structures that are expected to elicit positive emotions. Furthermore, the present incorporation of ugly feelings into a diagnostic reading illustrates McDonagh’s repertoire of ugly feelings an‎d negative emotional lan‎dscape. The findings highlight the paramount role of ugly feelings in contemporary theatre, especially in analysis of the hidden emotional mechanism an‎d affective workings. With its exploration of cultural, personal, an‎d societal underscoring of emotional agency, the thesis addresses the interconnection of contemporary scene, modern theatre, an‎d affect studies.

تئاتر و سينماي مارتين مك‌دونا نسخه‌اي تاريك از صحنه معاصر را به نمايش مي‌گذارند كه پر از خشونت و ابهام است. در تلفيق اين دو عنصر، شخصيت‌هاي مك‌دونا پاسخ‌هايي احساسي/ حس واره اي (affective) نشان مي‌دهند كه به عوامل عميق‌تر و احساسي‌تر اشاره دارند. اين پايان‌نامه به بررسي طنين احساسي/حس واره اي شخصيت‌پردازي‌هاي نمايشي مك‌دونا از طريق چارچوبي يكپارچه از نظريات درباره احساس/حس واره در نگاه نظريه پردازاني چون سيَن ناي و سارا احمد مي‌پردازد. با بهره‌گيري از نظريه حس واره (َAffect Theory)، اين مطالعه به بررسي عميق ساز و كارهاي احساسي/حس واره اي در سه نمايشنامه از مك دونا مي‌پردازد: ملكه زيبايي لينن، مرد بالشتي و دست زني در اسپوكن. با تحليل احساسات/حس واره هاي روايت مك‌دونا و وضعيت‌هاي احساسي شخصيت‌ها، اين پايان‌نامه پيچيدگي‌ها و كمبودهاي ساختارهايي را كه قرار است احساسات مثبت را برانگيزند، آشكار مي‌كند. علاوه بر اين، با بررسي "احساسات زشت" (به تعبير سين ناي) در اين خوانش از مك‌دونا، مشخص مي گردد كه اين نوع احساسات وجهي غالب در آثار اين نمايشنامه نويس شهير دارند. پايان نامه حاضر به چند و چون اين امر مي پردازد و جنبه هاي اجتماعي-فرهنگي و فردي آن را واكاوي مي كند.
