Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar endures as one of the most compelling literary explorations of mental illness in modern American literature, weaving metaphors that illuminate the hidden terrain of psychological distress. This thesis argues that a deeper resonance emerges only upon considering the intricate interplay between metaphor, culture, an‎d embodied experience – an interplay that not only shapes literary depictions of mental illness but also reflects an‎d influences the social an‎d historical contexts in which they arise. Adopting a multifaceted theoretical lens that combines Illness Narrative studies an‎d Cognitive Poetics, with a specific focus on the subfields of Conceptual Metaphor Theory an‎d Schemas an‎d Frames, the study investigates how Plath’s portrayal of Esther Greenwood’s psychological struggles extends beyond personal anguish to critique mid-20th-century American norms. By examining key conceptual metaphors – such as MENTAL ILLNESS IS LOST BODY CONTROL an‎d MENTAL ILLNESS IS BODY-DISSOCIATION – the thesis reveals how Plath’s language foregrounds the physicality of Esther’s distress, linking individual trauma to patriarchal expectations, medical stigmatization, an‎d cultural narratives of conformity. The findings underscore the pivotal role of embodied cognition in literary analysis: metaphors not only depict subjective experiences but also facilitate deeper empathy for an‎d understan‎ding of patients’ lived realities. In highlighting the cultural contingency of these metaphors, the thesis contributes to ongoing debates in literary studies an‎d Medical Humanities about how language mediates experiences of mental illness.

رمان حباب شيشه‌ اثر سيلويا پلات همچنان يكي از تأثيرگذارترين كاوش‌هاي ادبي در حوزۀ اختلالات رواني در ادبيات معاصر آمريكا به‌ شمار مي‌رود؛ اثري كه با بهره ‌گيري از استعاره‌هاي متعدد، ابعاد نهان رنج‌هاي رواني را به تصوير مي‌كشد. اين پايان‌نامه بر آن است كه ژرف ‌ترين لايه‌هاي معنا تنها زماني آشكار مي‌شوند كه فعل و انفعالات پيچيدۀ ميان استعاره، فرهنگ، و تجربه بدنمند (جسماني) در نظر گرفته شود – فعل و انفعالاتي كه نه ‌تنها شيوۀ بازنمايي ادبي بيماري رواني را شكل مي‌دهد، بلكه زمينه‌هاي اجتماعي و تاريخي‌اي را نيز بازتاب مي ‌دهد كه اين توصيفات در آن پديد مي‌آيند و بر آن‌ها اثر مي‌گذارد. با اتخاذ رويكردي نظري و چندوجهي كه مطالعات روايت بيماري، بوطيقاي شناختي و نظريۀ استعاره شناختي را در هم مي‌آميزد، اين پژوهش بررسي مي‌كند كه چگونه ترسيم درگيري‌هاي رواني استر گرينوود نزد پلات، فراتر از درد شخصي اوست و در عين حال انتقادي از هنجارهاي جامعۀ آمريكاييِ ميانه سده بيستم را نيز در بر دارد. از رهگذر واكاوي استعاره‌هاي شناختي كليدي – نظير «بيماري رواني به‌ منزلۀ از دست دادن كنترل بدن» و «بيماري رواني به ‌منزلۀ انفكاك از بدن» – اين پايان‌نامه نشان مي‌دهد كه زبان پلات چگونه بُعد جسماني رنج استر را برجسته كرده و پيوندي ميان آسيب فردي و انتظارات پدرسالارانه، برچسب‌ گذاري پزشكي و روايت‌هاي همخواني جوي اجتماعي برقرار مي‌سازد. يافته‌ها بر نقش كليدي درك تجسمي (شناخت تن‌يافته) در تحليل ادبي تأكيد دارند؛ به ‌طوري‌ كه استعاره‌ها نه‌ تنها تجربه‌هاي ذهني را بازمي ‌نمايانند، بلكه امكان همدلي و درك عميق ‌تري از زيستِ مبتلايان به بيماري رواني فراهم مي‌كنند. با تاكيد بر وابستگي فرهنگيِ اين استعاره‌ها، اين پژوهش به بحث‌هاي جاري در حوزۀ مطالعات ادبي و علوم انساني پزشكي دربارۀ چگونگي ميانجي‌گري زبان در تجارب بيماري رواني ياري مي ‌رساند.
