Before the emergence of new translation theories, the field was dominated by the “word-for-word” an‎d “sense-for-sense” approaches, with translation often performed by anyone with proficiency in two languages. However, the field has now evolved into a scientific discipline, an‎d the qualification of translators, particularly in the context of philosophical texts, has become increasingly significant. This study investigates how translatorsʹ educational backgrounds influence the translation of philosophical terminology an‎d the overall quality of translations, with a particular focus on two Persian translations of Ernst Cassirer’s The Myth of the State. It compares the work of Najaf Daryaban‎dari, a renowned literary translator without formal philosophical an‎d translation training, with that of Yadollah Moughen, who holds an academic degree in the history an‎d philosophy of science. Using Malcolm Williams’ argumentation-centered approach to Translation Quality Assessment (TQA), this study analyzes the argument schemas an‎d rhetorical topologies of the source text, subsequently applying the same analysis to both translations to examine how accurately the target texts reflect the argument superstructure of the original text. To assess the agreement on the translation of philosophical terminology, Cohen’s kappa coefficient was employed. The philosophical terms for analysis were drawn from The Dictionary of Untranslatables: A Philosophical Lexicon, with 139 terms from the dictionary included in the source text; of these, 59 were ran‎domly selec‎ted for eva‎luation. The analysis revealed fair agreement in the translation of philosophical terms, indicating a lack of absolute consistency between the two translators in rendering these terms. In terms of translation quality, Moughenʹs academic background did not result in a significantly superior translation compared to Daryaban‎dari’s literary experience. The findings suggest that both translators successfully conveyed nearly all the core argument structures of the source text. Overall, while formal academic training in philosophy may enhance translation quality, it does not necessarily lead to superior results. Rather, a combination of philosophical knowledge, practical experience, an‎d skill in translating complex texts is essential for effective philosophical translation.

پيش از ظهور نظريه‌هاي نوين ترجمه، حوزه ترجمه تحت سلطه رويكردهاي «واژه به واژه» و «معنا به معنا» قرار داشت و ترجمه معمولاً توسط هر فردي كه به دو زبان مسلط بود انجام مي‌شد. امروزه اما اين حوزه به يك رشته علمي تبديل شده و صلاحيت مترجمان، به‌خصوص در زمينه متون فلسفي، اهميت فزاينده‌اي پيدا كرده است. اين مطالعه با تمركز ويژه‌اي بر دو ترجمه فارسي كتاب «اسطوره دولت» از ارنست كاسيرر بررسي مي‌كند كه چگونه پيشينه تحصيلي مترجمان بر ترجمه اصطلاحات فلسفي و كيفيت كلي ترجمه‌ها تأثير مي‌گذارد. در اين ميان، كار نجف دريابندري، مترجم ادبي برجسته‌اي كه فاقد آموزش رسمي در فلسفه و ترجمه است، با ترجمه يدالله موقن كه مدرك تحصيلي در تاريخ و فلسفه علم دارد، مقايسه مي‌شود. با استفاده از رويكرد استدلال‌محورمالكوم ويليامز براي ارزيابي كيفيت ترجمه‌ها، اين مطالعه ساختارهاي استدلالي و بلاغي متن مبداء را تحليل نموده و سپس همين تحليل را بر هر دو ترجمه اعمال مي‌كند تا بررسي نمايد كه چگونه ابرساختار استدلالي متن مبداء به درستي در متون مقصد بازتاب يافته است. براي سنجش ميزان توافق در ترجمه اصطلاحات فلسفي، ضريب كاپا كوهن به كار گرفته شده است. اصطلاحات فلسفي مورد تحليل از «فرهنگ لغت ترجمه‌ناپذيرها: اصطلاح‌نامهٔ فلسفي» استخراج شده‌اند. 139 اصطلاح فرهنگ لغت در متن مبداء به‌كار رفته است، كه از آن ميان 59 اصطلاح به‌طور تصادفي براي ارزيابي انتخاب شده‌اند. تحليل انجام‌شده، توافق متوسط رو به پايين در ترجمه اصطلاحات فلسفي را نشان داد كه بيانگر عدم انسجام مطلق بين دو مترجم در ارائه اين اصطلاحات است. از نظر كيفيت ترجمه، پيشينه آكادميك موقن نتوانست ترجمه‌اي به بسيار بهتر نسبت به تجربه ادبي دريابندري ارائه دهد. در مجموع، نتايج حاكي از آن است كه هر دو مترجم تقريباً تمامي ساختارهاي اصلي استدلالي متن مبداء را به‌طور موفقيت‌آميزي منتقل كرده‌اند. بنابراين، گرچه آموزش رسمي آكادميك در فلسفه ممكن است كيفيت ترجمه را ارتقاء دهد، اما الزاما نمي‌تواند منجر به نتايج برتر شود؛ بلكه تركيبي از دانش فلسفي، تجربه عملي و مهارت در ترجمه متون پيچيده براي موفقيت در ترجمه متون فلسفي ضروري است.
