Interlanguage pragmatic competence concerns foreign language learners’ ability to comprehend an‎d develop pragmatic knowledge. A part of this competence includes speech-acts. The study of speech acts in interlanguage is crucial for understan‎ding the challenges an‎d strategies involved in the development of pragmatic competence as a part of language learning. This study aimed to investigate the speech acts of request an‎d apology in the academic context of Iraqi EFL learners at the University of Misan following a mixed-methods design. The study sought to find out the factors that influence EFL learnersʹ pragmatic competence an‎d the learnersʹ most common pragmatic strategies an‎d errors. It also compared the interlanguage pragmatic competence of intermediate an‎d advanced learners an‎d Iraqi an‎d native English speakers. The study used a Multiple-Choice Discourse Completion Test (MDCT) consisting of a number of scenarios on speech acts of request an‎d apology for which the learners were asked to provide the best response. The collected data were analyzed using frequency counts, independent-samples t-test, an‎d thematic analysis. The findings indicated that politeness strategies, speech acts realization patterns, an‎d linguistic markers were the most common strategies; an‎d improper use of politeness strategies, incorrect verb forms, insufficient acknowledgment of responsibility, improper use of apology expressions an‎d lack of appropriate cultural context were the most common sources of error by Iraqi EFL learners. Also, advanced learners had a significantly higher score in interlanguage competence of speech acts compared with intermediate level learners. Directness vs. indirectness, use of politeness markers, perceived imposition, offering remedies, an‎d expressing sincerity were the differences between Iraqi an‎d native English speakers.

استعداد ارتباط عملي بين‌زباني به توانايي زبان‌آموزان خارجي براي درك و رشد دانش ارتباط عملي مربوط مي‌شود. بخشي از اين استعداد شامل گفتار و رفتار مي شود. مطالعه كنش هاي گفتاري در بين زبان ها براي درك چالش ها و استراتژي هاي موثر در رشد توانايي ارتباط عملي به عنوان بخشي از يادگيري زبان بسيار مهم است. اين مطالعه با هدف بررسي رفتارهاي گفتاري درخواست كردن و عذرخواهي در محيط آكادميك زبان آموزان عراقي زبان انگليسي در دانشگاه ميسان با هدف خاص يافتن عوامل مؤثر بر استعداد ارتباط عملي زبان آموزان و رايج ترين خطاهاي ارتباط عملي آنان انجام شد. همچنين استعداد ارتباط عملي بين زباني زبان آموزان متوسط و پيشرفته و فراگيران عراقي زبان انگليسي با گويندگان بومي زبان انگليسي با هم مقايسه شده اند. اين مطالعه از آزمون تكميل گفتمان چند گزينه اي استفاده كرد كه شامل تعدادي سناريو در مورد كنش گفتاري درخواست كردن و عذرخواهي بود كه از زبان آموزان خواسته شد بهترين پاسخ را ارائه دهند. يافته‌ها نشان دادند كه راهبردهاي مودب بودن، الگوهاي تحقق كنش هاي گفتاري و نشانگرهاي زباني رايج‌ترين راهبردها بودند. و استفاده نادرست از راهبردهاي مودب بودن، اشكال افعال نادرست، اعتراف ناكافي به مسئوليت، استفاده نادرست از عبارات عذرخواهي و نداشتن زمينه فرهنگي مناسب، رايج ترين منابع خطاهاي زبان آموزان انگليسي عراقي بودند. همچنين، زبان آموزان پيشرفته در استعداد بين زباني كنش هاي گفتاري نمره بالاتري نسبت به زبان آموزان سطح متوسط كسب كردند. صراحت در مقابل ابهام، استفاده از نشانگرهاي مودب بودن، تحميل غيرمستقيم، ارائه راه حل ها و ابراز صداقت تفاوت هاي بين زبان آموزان عراقي و انگليسي زبانان بومي بود.
