English Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the potential of flipped learning to promote EFL learnersʹ behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement with language learning tasks. Also, the study investigates the relationship between the two learner variables of perceived platform quality and motivation and their overall engagement following a mixed methods design. To this purpose, 60 pre-intermediate male and female EFL learners within the age range of 18 to 22 years participated in a study in two groups of flipped and control. The flipped group received its recorded lessons through Google Drive before the class and then participated in the class for discussion sessions and doing the exercises. The control group received its lessons in conventional, face-to-face classrooms and did the exercises at home. The two groupsʹ three types of engagement were assessed by three expert researchers using designed checklists based on Hiver et al.ʹs (2021) list of engagement indexes. Also, the flipped groupʹs perceived platform quality and motivation were measured after intervention. Data on student engagement were gathered using specifically designed checklists based on Hiver et al.ʹs (2021) list of engagement indexes. Data on the participantsʹ motivation and their perceptions of platform quality were collected using specifically designed and validated likert type questionnaires. Qualitative data on the participantsʹ perceptions about flipped learning were collected using semi-structured interview. Analyses of quantitative data revealed that flipped learning left significant positive effects on EFL learnersʹ behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement, and that there were significant positive relationships between the participantsʹ perceived platform quality and motivation and their overall engagement. Qualitative analysis of data collected through a semi-structured interview revealed these themes pointing to the advantages of flipped learning over conventional classrooms: efficacy of flipped classes for learning English; providing the opportunity to watch the lessons several times; improved learner-learner and teacher-learner interaction; learner-friendliness of flipped learning for the current generation of students called digital natives; improved behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement and learning due to availability of multimedia materials; and reduction of classroom anxiety and developing independence. Based on the findings, relevant pedagogical implications are discussed and topics for further research are suggested.

اين تحقيق با هدف بررسي توانايي روش يادگيري معكوس براي ارتقاء ميزان درگيري رفتاري، شناختي و عاطفي فراگيران زبان انگليسي با تكاليف زبان آموزي و بررسي رابطه بين دو متغير كيفيت پلتفرم آموزشي و انگيزه فراگيران و درگيري كلي آنها با استفاده از روش تحقيق تركيبي توضيحي انجام شد. بدين منظور، 60 فراگير زبان انگليسي سطح پيش متوسط در دو گروه معكوس و آزمايشي در يك مطالعه شركت كردند. گروه يادگيري معكوس قبل از كلاس درس هاي ضبط شده خود را از طريق گوگل درايو دريافت كرده و سپس براي جلسات بحث و گفتگو و انجام تمرين ها در كلاس شركت مي كرد. گروه مقايسه دروس خود را در كلاس هاي معمولي و حضوري دريافت كرده و تمرينات را در منزل انجام مي دادند. سه نوع تعامل دو گروه قبل و بعد از مداخله آزمايشي ثبت شد و كيفيت پلتفرم از نظر زبان آموزان گروه معكوس و انگيزه آنان پس از مداخله اندازه گيري شد. تحليل داده هاي كمي نشان داد كه يادگيري معكوس تأثيرات مثبت معناداري بر درگيري رفتاري، شناختي و عاطفي زبانآموزان برجاي ميگذارد و بين كيفيت پنداري پلتفرم و انگيزه شركتكنندگان و درگيري كلي آنها روابط مثبت معناداري وجود دارد. تجزيه و تحليل كيفي دادههاي جمعآوريشده از طريق مصاحبه نيمه ساختاريافته، اين موضوعات را نشان داد كه به مزاياي يادگيري معكوس نسبت به كلاسهاي معمولي اشاره ميكنند: اثربخشي كلاس هاي معكوس براي يادگيري زبان انگليسي؛ ايجاد فرصت براي تماشاي چندين باره درس ها؛ بهبود تعامل يادگيرنده ها با هم و معلم با يادگيرنده؛ فراگير پسند بودن يادگيري معكوس براي نسل فعلي فراگيران كه فراگيران ديجيتال ناميده مي شوند؛ بهبود درگيري رفتاري، شناختي و عاطفي و يادگيري به دليل در دسترس بودن مواد آموزشي چند رسانه اي؛ كاهش اضطراب كلاس درس و ايجاد استقلال. بر اساس يافتههاي تحقيق، مفاهيم آموزشي مرتبط مورد بحث قرار گرفته و موضوعاتي براي تحقيقات بيشتر پيشنهاد شده اند.
