English Abstract
Translating metaphors in the Holy Quran presents a distinct challenge for linguists and language researchers due to the textʹs divine essence and the presence of intricate figurative expressions conveyed in an elevated form of the Arabic language. This study explores the impact of the target textʹs form, whether in prose or poetry, and the effect of translatorsʹ native language on the applied translation techniques for Quranic metaphors. The primary model for this research is drawn from Newmarkʹs (1988) model. This model comprises seven procedures for translating metaphors. These procedures involve reproducing the source language (SL) image in the target language (TL), replacing the SL metaphor in the TL, translating metaphor into simile, translating metaphor using simile and sense, transforming metaphor into sense, deletion, and translating metaphor using the same metaphor combined with sense. The procedures were alphabetically coded. The selected translators include Nikayin (2000), as the only poet-translator of the Holy Quran, and three non-poet translators: Shakir (1959), Pickthall (1930), and Yusuf Ali (1934). The chosen metaphors span both the initial and final ten chapters of the Holy Quran. A systematic analysis is conducted for each verse, involving the identification of Arabic and English metaphor contexts, interpretation of the Arabic metaphor, and subsequent translation analysis. The results of the study indicated that the primary method used by all translators was reproducing metaphors in the Target Language (procedure A), accounting for 72% of translated Quranic metaphors. The second most employed method was converting metaphor to sense (procedure E), with 21% translation rate. The study highlights the influence of both translatorsʹ native language and the target language form on their choice of procedures for translating Quranic metaphors. The study revealed that Nikayinʹs native language influences his procedural choices and translation approach to some extent. Furthermore, the form of the target text plays a role in how translators render Quranic metaphors. The study suggests that the optimal approach for translating metaphors is one that preserves both the intended meaning and its rhetorical impact.

FarsiAbstract
