This dissertation explores Philip Larkin’s poetry through the lens of New Economic Criticism. It addresses three core questions: the significance of metaphors an‎d figurations of exchange related to body, time, money, an‎d language; the distinction between Economy an‎d Chrematistic in Larkin’s poetry; an‎d the role of irony within his poetic economy. By reorienting the term “economics” back to its original Greek sense, this study integrates the humanistic, psychological, social, ethical, an‎d aesthetic dimensions often overlooked in modern economics. The analysis focuses on four primary economies in Larkin’s poetry: the body, time, money, an‎d language. The economy of the body is examined through poems such as "Toads" an‎d "Toads Revisited," which relate to the commodification of human labor an‎d identity. The economy of time, interwoven with leisure an‎d labor, is explored in poems like "Days" an‎d "The Whitsun Weddings" to reveal the capitalist commodification of temporal experiences. The economy of money addresses societal values an‎d identity, with critical readings of "Money" an‎d "Sunny Prestatyn." It demonstrates how economic considerations infiltrate personal an‎d collective consciousness. The economy of language focuses on Larkin’s use of irony, showing how minimal expression achieves maximal meaning in poems like "Next, Please" an‎d "Church Going." This study situates Larkin’s poetic expressions within the broader economic an‎d cultural shifts of the post-war period. It sheds light on how his poetry critiques an‎d reflects the commodification of human existence. It draws on the historical an‎d philosophical distinctions between ancient Greek notions of oikos (household management) an‎d chrematistics (money-making), exploring their relevance in Larkin’s modern context. The present dissertation contributes to the growing field of New Economic Criticism since it demonstrates its potential to redefine an‎d deepen the understan‎ding of modern poetry works through New Economic Criticism.

اين رساله به بررسي اشعار فيليپ لاركين از ديدگاه نقد اقتصادي جديد مي‌پردازد. اين پژوهش به سه پرسش اصلي پاسخ مي‌دهد: اهميت استعاره‌ها و تصويرسازي‌هاي مبادله مرتبط با بدن، زمان، پول و زبان؛ تمايز بين اقتصاد و كرماتيك در اشعار لاركين؛ و نقش كنايه در اقتصاد شعري او. با بازگشت به معناي اصلي كلمه "اقتصاد" در زبان يوناني، اين مطالعه به ابعاد انساني، روان‌شناختي، اجتماعي، اخلاقي و زيبايي‌شناختي كه اغلب در اقتصاد مدرن ناديده گرفته مي‌شوند، نظام مي‌بخشد. تحليل بر چهار اقتصاد اصلي در اشعار لاركين تمركز دارد: بدن، زمان، پول و زبان. اقتصاد بدن از طريق اشعاري مانند "وزغ‌ها" و "بازگشت به وزغ‌ها" مورد بررسي قرار مي‌گيرد كه به كالا شدن كار انساني و هويت مربوط مي‌شود. اقتصاد زمان كه با اوقات فراغت و كار درهم‌تنيده شده است، در اشعاري مانند "روزها" و "ازدواج‌هاي ويتسن" بررسي مي‌شود تا كالا شدن تجربيات زماني در سرمايه‌داري را نشان دهد. اقتصاد پول به ارزش‌هاي اجتماعي و هويت مي‌پردازد و با خوانش انتقادي اشعاري مانند "پول" و "ساني پرستاتين" نشان مي‌دهد كه چگونه ملاحظات اقتصادي به آگاهي شخصي و جمعي نفوذ مي‌كند. اقتصاد زبان بر استفاده لاركين از كنايه تمركز دارد و نشان مي‌دهد كه، در اشعاري مانند "بعدي، لطفاً" و "رفتن به كليسا،" چگونه بيان حداقلي به معناي حداكثري دست مي‌يابد. اين رساله بيان‌هاي شعري لاركين را در زمينه تغييرات اقتصادي و فرهنگي دوره پس از جنگ بررسي كرده و روشن مي‌كند كه چگونه شعر او به نقد و بازتاب كالا شدن وجود انساني در آن بافت تاريخي-اجتماعي مي‌پردازد. اين مطالعه از تمايزات تاريخي و فلسفي بين مفاهيم يوناني باستاني اويكوس (مديريت خانه) و كرماتيك (پول‌سازي) بهره مي‌برد و ارتباط آنها را در اشعار مدرن لاركين بررسي مي‌كند. اهميت اين پژوهش در كاربرد نوآورانه نقد اقتصادي جديد براي خوانش ادبيات قرن بيستم، به ويژه آثار لاركين، نهفته است. اين رساله به حوزه رو به رشد نقد اقتصادي جديد كمك مي‌كند چرا كه نشان مي‌دهد اين رويكرد چگونه مي‌تواند فهم و عمق آثار شعري مدرن را بازتعريف و تقويت كند.
