The way language learners respond to comparison information, preva‎lent in EFL classrooms, can have a spectrum of cognitive, affective, an‎d behavioral implications in the journey of second language (L2) acquisition. This study aimed to unravel these potential outcomes by examining the interplay among four social comparison orientations an‎d L2 anxiety, enjoyment, willingness to communicate (WTC), academic resilience, an‎d perceived English competence. To this end, a total of 290 (45.5 % male an‎d 54.5 % female) Iranian EFL learners were selec‎ted via convenience sampling method. The participants were taking general English courses at English language an‎d literature department of University of Isfahan, Iran. Data collected through adapted self-report scales were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 an‎d Amos 26.0 statistical software. The path analysis results revealed that upward-identification comparison positively predicted enjoyment, WTC, an‎d resilience, whereas upward-contrastive comparison positively predicted anxiety an‎d negatively predicted enjoyment, WTC, resilience, an‎d perceived L2 competence. The results also indicated that in case of downward comparison, identification with the comparison target predicted higher anxiety an‎d lower enjoyment, resilience, an‎d perceived competence, while focusing on the differences between the self an‎d others (contrast) predicted lower anxiety an‎d higher enjoyment, WTC, an‎d perceived L2 competence. It was finally found that self-perceived language competence mediated the relationship of upward-contrast an‎d downward-contrast comparisons with L2 anxiety, enjoyment, an‎d WTC. These findings offer practical implications for teachers, school administrators, an‎d policymakers.

كلاسها بهعنوان منابع پوياي مقايسه اجتماعي شناخته مي شوند. از اين رو، نحوه واكنش زبانآموزان به اطلاعات مقايسهاي در كلاسهاي آموزش زبان انگليسي ميتواند تأثيرات متنوعي بر جنبههاي شناختي، عاطفي و رفتاري آنها در مسير يادگيري زبان دوم داشته باشد.اين مطالعه با هدف بررسي اين پيامدها، به تحليل تعامل بين چهار نوع گرايش در مقايسه اجتماعي و عواملي مانند اضطراب، لذت، تمايل به برقراري ارتباط، تابآوري تحصيلي و ادراك توانش زباني پرداخته است.براي انجام اين پژوهش، 290 زبانآموز ايراني (45.5 درصد مرد و 54.5 درصد زن) از طريق روش نمونهگيري در دسترس انتخاب شدند. اين افراد در كلاسهاي عمومي زبان انگليسي دانشگاه اصفهان شركت داشتند. دادهها از طريق مقياسهاي خودگزارشي جمعآوري و با استفاده از نرمافزارهاي آماري اس پي اس اس 26 و آموس 26 تحليل شدند. نتايج برآمده از تحليل مسير نشان داد كه مقايسه همسو با فرد برتر بهطور مثبت لذت، تمايل به برقراري ارتباط و تابآوري را پيش بيني مي كند.در مقابل، مقايسه تضادي با فرد برتر، اضطراب را افزايش و لذت، تمايل به برقراري ارتباط، تابآوري و ادراك توانش زباني را كاهش ميدهد. همچنين، مقايسه همسو با فرد ضعيفتر باعث افزايش اضطراب و كاهش لذت، تابآوري و ادراك توانش زباني شده، در حاليكه مقايسه تضادي با فرد ضعيفتر اضطراب را كاهش و لذت، تمايل به برقراري ارتباط و ادراك توانش زباني را افزايش ميدهد.در نهايت، نتايج نشان داد كه ادراك توانش زباني رابطه بين مقايسه تضادي با فرد برتر و فرد ضعيفتر را با اضطراب، لذت و تمايل به برقراري ارتباط ميانجيگري ميكند. اين يافتهها ميتوانند پيامدهاي كاربردي براي معلمان، مديران مدارس و آموزشگاهها و سياستگذاران آموزشي داشته باشند.
