Since 2011, Syria has experienced violent events and, over time, has entered an increasingly complex situation. Following the popular uprisings in North Africa and West Asia—known as the Arab Spring or Islamic Awakening—anti-government protests also emerged in Syria and, within a short period, turned into a full-scale war due to the involvement of external actors. While opposition forces, supported by the Western–Arab–Turkish axis, were on the verge of capturing Damascus, the intervention of Iran and subsequently Russia altered the balance of power, enabling the Assad government to regain control over most parts of the country. Diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis continued, but progress remained limited. By 2024, the Syrian government was facing serious economic and social challenges, including rising prices and widespread public dissatisfaction. Under these conditions, opposition forces operating under the new banner of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham launched a rapid offensive, captured major Syrian cities, and toppled the government within ten days. Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Syria has been confronted with numerous challenges that have placed the country’s future in a state of profound uncertainty. This research adopts a descriptive–analytical approach and, based on an examination of a wide range of academic sources, analyzes three plausible scenarios for Syria’s future. In each scenario, regional and trans-regional actors play significant roles, pursuing diverse and often conflicting objectives. These actors, driven by competing interests, will exert profound influence on Syria’s future developments. The findings of this study indicate that although all three scenarios are theoretically possible, given the current conditions and key driving forces, the most likely trajectory for Syria is the continuation of the existing situation accompanied by the gradual consolidation of a new government under the leadership of Ahmad al-Sharaa.
