The discourse and challenge surrounding the status and position of women throughout human history—from the pre-Islamic era to the contemporary age—underscore the profound significance of this subject. This discourse reflects the influence of various factors, including religious narratives, patriarchal customs, hegemonic interests, and intellectual colonialism. Within the trajectory of philosophical thought, this patriarchal hegemony—often characterized as androcentric philosophy—has deprived women of the opportunity for genuine agency and, in certain historical periods, has even denied them fundamental human rights. Just as history has frequently been written from a masculine perspective, the history of philosophy has similarly progressed in favor of men, imbued with the same ethos. Furthermore, philosophical feminist movements, due to their Western roots, lack of foundational authenticity, and reliance on distorted revelatory principles, have fallen into the trap of power-seeking and capitalist interests. While a deep engagement with authentic and transcendent Islamic teachings offers a paradigm beyond the binary extremes of tradition and modernity, intellectual and cultural colonialism, the dominance of patriarchal thought, and misinterpretations of religious texts (Quranic verses and traditions) have long perpetuated male-centrism even within the works of Muslim philosophers.
Given the vital role of women in shaping and orienting society, this research utilizes a library-based, analytical approach combined with qualitative content analysis. After examining the perspectives of various thinkers from the past to the present, it analyzes the historical and philosophical underpinnings of the subordinate status of women in philosophical thought. Subsequently, it introduces, explains, and expands upon the “Third Model” of womanhood—specifically, the Muslim woman under divine governance, which has emerged from the paradigm of the Islamic Revolution. The results indicate that this “Third Model,” beyond liberating women from patriarchal hegemony and the influence of power and wealth, resolves the dichotomy of modern excess and traditional deficiency. By establishing human dignity, accounting for the individual and social requirements of contemporary society, and providing a framework for women’s agency—both within the family and through active participation in intellectual, cultural, social, and political spheres—this model provides a robust response to the needs of contemporary societies.
