Abstract
In recent years, investor attention has emerged as one of the important concepts in the behavioral finance literature and has played a significant role in managerial decision-making and corporate financial policies. On the one hand, increased investor attention can strengthen market monitoring, reduce information asymmetry, and improve corporate transparency, thereby constraining managerial behavior. On the other hand, greater investor attention may increase market pressure to achieve short-term returns and consequently encourage managers to engage in financial activities rather than real investments. In this context, corporate financialization, as an important phenomenon in economics and finance, has attracted considerable attention from researchers. Furthermore, the characteristics of a firmʹs information environment, firm size, and the degree of market competition may influence the magnitude and direction of this relationship. Accordingly, the present study aims to examine the effect of investor attention on corporate financialization and to investigate the moderating roles of information opacity, firm size, and market competition in this relationship.
To achieve the research objective, four hypotheses were developed. The first hypothesis examined the effect of investor attention on corporate financialization. The second, third, and fourth hypotheses examined, respectively, the moderating roles of information opacity, firm size, and market competition in the relationship between investor attention and corporate financialization. To test the research hypotheses, financial data from 148 companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange were collected over the period from 1394 to 1403. After applying the sampling criteria, the required data were extracted from companiesʹ financial statements, the Codal disclosure system, and Rahavard Novin. The research hypotheses were tested using multiple regression models based on panel data, while controlling for year and industry effects. The analyses were conducted using EViews 12 software.
The results of testing the research hypotheses showed that investor attention has a negative and statistically significant effect on corporate financialization, indicating that an increase in investor attention is associated with a reduction in the level of corporate financialization. Furthermore, the findings revealed that, contrary to expectations, information opacity did not strengthen the effect of investor attention on corporate financialization; rather, it weakened this relationship. Regarding firm size, no statistically significant evidence was found to support its moderating role in the relationship between investor attention and corporate financialization. Therefore, firm size did not significantly strengthen or weaken the effect of investor attention on corporate financialization. In contrast, the results indicated that market competition strengthened the effect of investor attention on corporate financialization, such that the negative effect of investor attention on corporate financialization was stronger in more competitive market environments.
