Happiness is one of the most fundamental human aspirations and an important subject in religious teachings. Identifying the paths to happiness and the obstacles that prevent human beings from attaining it is therefore a significant issue in understanding the ethical and educational systems of religions. The present study aims to examine and compare the views of the Sahifa Sajjadiya and the Gathas regarding the paths to happiness and the obstacles to attaining it. It seeks to identify the relevant components in these two texts and to explain their similarities and differences. Accordingly, the main research question concerns the nature of the similarities and differences between the Sahifa Sajjadiya and the Gathas in this regard.
This study employs a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach. First, the components related to the paths to happiness and its obstacles were extracted from the two texts and categorized. They were then compared in order to identify and explain their similarities and differences. In addition to describing these similarities and differences, the comparative method adopted in this study seeks to explain them and to move beyond merely apparent similarities and differences.
The findings indicate that, in the Sahifa Sajjadiya, praising and thanking God, praying to and asking God, hope and trust in God, obedience and servitude to God, invoking blessings upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them), remembrance of death, and martyrdom in fighting against enemies are among the most important paths to happiness. In contrast, sin and disobedience to God, taking divine promises lightly, failure to return to God and repent, and pride and self-aggrandizement are identified as obstacles to happiness. In the Gathas, praying to and seeking assistance from Ahura Mazda, following Zoroaster as the leader of the community, obeying and seeking the approval of Ahura Mazda, making use of the power of wisdom, choosing and embracing truth, inviting others to truth, and acquiring the attributes of Ahura Mazda are identified as paths to happiness. Following false leaders, lying and deception, and ignorance and blind imitation are regarded as obstacles to happiness.
A comparison of the findings demonstrates that the two texts show conceptual similarities in certain components, particularly prayer and seeking assistance from the Supreme Being, as well as obedience and following a path that pleases God or Ahura Mazda. At the same time, significant differences can also be observed. The Sahifa Sajjadiya emphasizes such components as praising and thanking God, hope and trust in God, invoking blessings upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them), and remembrance of death, whereas the Gathas place greater emphasis on wisdom, free choice, choosing truth, and human responsibility in selecting the right path. With regard to the obstacles to happiness, both texts warn human beings against deviation from the right path, although the specific examples and the manner in which these obstacles are expressed differ. Overall, the findings suggest that despite differences in the historical and religious contexts of the two texts, as well as differences in the status of the figures to whom these works are attributed, both emphasize the role of the human relationship with the Supreme Being and the importance of human actions and choices in pursuing the path to happiness
