Steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) dissipate seismic energy primarily through controlled inelastic deformation of link beams; consequently, reliable estimation of link response is essential for nonlinear assessment. This study develops an interpretable data-driven surrogate framework for predicting six characteristic shear-force ordinates of the hysteretic backbone curve of steel shear links, providing an efficient alternative to repeated nonlinear cyclic analyses within the investigated parameter domain.
A nonlinear finite-element model was developed in Abaqus and validated against experimental responses of steel link specimens. A parametric Python script was then used to generate and analyze 160 models comprising 40 W-sections and four dimensionless link-length ratios, ρ = 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6. Each specimen was represented by ten dimensionless geometric and sectional features. The six target outputs were the yield shear force, the shear forces at total rotations of 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06 rad, and the maximum shear resistance. All force outputs were normalized by the plastic shear capacity of each section. These outputs provide a multi-point representation of the positive hysteretic backbone and do not describe unloading, reloading, or cyclic-degradation rules.
Three tree-based gradient-boosting algorithms—XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost—were evaluated. For each algorithm, an independent regression model was developed for each target, yielding 18 trained models. The database was divided into 128 development specimens and 32 test specimens while preserving the distribution of ρ. Hyperparameters were optimized using Optuna with five-fold cross-validation on the development set, and the test set remained excluded from training, tuning, and model selection.
Based on out-of-fold performance, CatBoost provided the strongest overall performance, with mean R² = 0.9239 and RMSE = 0.0514, and was selected for detailed evaluation. On the test set, CatBoost achieved mean R² = 0.9368, RMSE = 0.0315, and MAE = 0.0235, compared with R² = 0.8674, RMSE = 0.0451, and MAE = 0.0279 for XGBoost and R² = 0.8490, RMSE = 0.0478, and MAE = 0.0309 for LightGBM. The mean test RMSE of CatBoost was approximately 30.1% and 34.0% lower than those of XGBoost and LightGBM, respectively. After back-transformation to the actual force scale, CatBoost yielded a mean MAPE of 1.49%. It also produced the higher test-set R² for five of the six targets, whereas XGBoost performed better for the force at 0.04 rad.
Interpretability analyses showed that the web-slenderness ratio had the largest aggregated feature importance across the six CatBoost models, followed by a combined feature representing the interaction between web slenderness and relative link length. SHAP analysis of the normalized maximum shear resistance further identified these variables, together with the web-area ratio, as the dominant contributors; larger values of the web-slenderness-related features generally produced negative SHAP contributions within the investigated data range. These findings describe model behavior rather than independent causal relationships.
For five test specimens with errors close to the median, CatBoost predictions remained close to the finite-element reference values, while the modified Richards model gave the closest response among the three selected classical models. This comparison does not establish general superiority. Overall, the framework enables rapid estimation of selected hysteretic-backbone forces and supports preliminary parametric assessment without rerunning nonlinear cyclic analyses. Its use should remain within the geometric, material, and modeling domain represented by the finite-element database.
