In recent years, tattooing has become increasingly prevalent among Iranian women. This study aims to understand and interpret the meanings of tattoos from women’s perspectives, drawing on Foucault’s concepts of power, surveillance, and resistance, as well as Goffman’s perspective on the management of bodily presentation. The research was conducted within an interpretive-constructivist paradigm using a holistic narrative analysis approach. The participants included 16 women living in Isfahan who had at least one permanent tattoo. They were selected through purposive sampling, and data were collected through in-depth narrative interviews. The findings indicate that tattoos are not merely aesthetic practices for these women but are associated with bodily autonomy, personal identity, social perceptions, and the management of self-presentation. The results show that women use tattoos to redefine their relationship with their bodies while consciously managing their visibility or concealment in response to social norms. Thus, tattooing is a meaningful act connected to personal narratives, life trajectories, and socio-cultural contexts.
