This study examines and reconstructs the historical geography of the wars between the Achaemenids and the Greeks and Macedonians during the period from 546 to 331 BC. The primary objective of the research is to explain and represent the geographical setting of these confrontations by identifying the locations of military events, reconstructing campaign routes, and examining the role of natural and human geographical factors in the course of military operations. Accordingly, major events ranging from the conquest of Lydia and Cyrus II’s confrontation with Croesus to the Battle of Gaugamela—including the Ionian Revolt, Marathon, Thermopylae, Artemisiun, Salamis, Plataea, Mycale, Agesilaus’s campaign in Asia Minor, and the battles of Granicus and Issus—are examined.
The research adopts a historical, descriptive-analytical, and comparative approach based primarily on library and documentary research. Data derived from classical sources, modern historical and military studies, atlases, and geographical sources were collected and comparatively evaluated. Historical maps, topographic data, and cartographic tools were also employed to reconstruct and represent the geographical settings of the events under study. The findings indicate that geography was not merely the setting in which these wars took place, but also played a significant role in the selection of campaign routes, the determination of defensive positions, the deployment and formation of troops, the choice of battlefields, and the course of military operations. Furthermore, comparing the accounts of ancient historians with geographical evidence makes it possible to evaluate discrepancies among historical narratives and to approximate the probable locations of certain historical sites and routes. Overall, the study demonstrates that the reconstruction of historical geography is an important means of achieving a more precise understanding of ancient military history and of explaining the relationship between geographical environment and military developments.
