The rapid growth of the child population in cities and the decisive role of public spaces in children’s physical, psychological, and social development have highlighted the necessity of reconsidering the distribution patterns and quality of urban play spaces. Shahrekord, as the capital of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, has experienced considerable physical expansion and demographic change in recent years; however, the spatial distribution and quality of children’s playground parks in this city have not yet been systematically analyzed within the framework of the Child-Friendly City approach. Accordingly, the present study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of children’s playground parks in Shahrekord with an emphasis on child-friendly city principles.
This research is descriptive–analytical in nature, and its data were collected through a combination of secondary and primary sources. Secondary data include census statistics, GIS layers, land-use maps, and organizational datasets, while primary data consist of field observations and qualitative assessments of park conditions. Spatial analyses were conducted using indicators such as park area, per capita green space, the population of children aged 0–18 years, standard child service catchment areas (100 and 500 meters), and the degree of spatial overlap between parks and residential areas. ArcMap software was employed for spatial analyses, and Excel was used for quantitative analyses and indicator calculations.
The findings indicate that the spatial distribution of children’s playground parks in Shahrekord is uneven, inefficient, and poorly aligned with the spatial pattern of the child population. Accessibility analysis reveals that a substantial proportion of children, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods, fall outside appropriate service catchment areas and lack safe and convenient access to play spaces. Moreover, the environmental and physical quality of parks across the city is highly heterogeneous, and some neighborhoods are either devoid of playground parks or equipped with low-quality facilities, especially in terms of safety and play equipment.
Overall, the results suggest that Shahrekord falls short of child-friendly city standards regarding equitable and balanced access to playground parks and play spaces. Achieving spatial justice and equal access for children requires targeted, phased interventions grounded in spatial analysis. Finally, the study proposes a set of scientific and practical recommendations, including prioritizing interventions in neighborhoods with the greatest service deficiencies, improving the environmental quality of existing parks, planning for the development of new parks in areas with high concentrations of children, and promoting the participation of children and parents in the design and management of play spaces.
