Prediction land subsidence in the Isfahan aquifer: Machine learning algorithm versus the Classical method

In recent decades, the Isfahan–Borkhar aquifer has been subjected to excessive and unsustainable groundwater extraction, leading to significant water table decline, compaction of clay and silt layers, and consequent land subsidence. This phenomenon poses a serious threat to the regionʹs urban and agricultural infrastructure, underscoring the critical need for accurate monitoring and prediction of its spatiotemporal patterns. In this study, a ten-year time series (2014–2023) of Sentinel-1 images processed using the SBAS method within the LiCSAR/LiCSBAS chain was combined with monthly piezometric well data, ERA5-Land climate variables, and 13 static hydrogeological and geomorphological layers to construct a comprehensive database for 939 sample points distributed across the aquifer. Three machine learning models, namely Random Forest, XGBoost, and a hybrid deep Conv1D-BiLSTM-Attention network, were subsequently developed for the spatial and temporal prediction of land subsidence, and their performance was benchmarked against a classical reference method(InSAR/SBAS observations).
The hybrid deep model, evaluated on a 14-month independent test set, achieved R² = 0.9886 and RMSE = 7.67 mm, demonstrating a strong capability for reconstructing seasonal fluctuations and capturing the time-lag phenomenon associated with clay layer consolidation. The Random Forest and XGBoost models exhibited exceptional performance in spatial subsidence assessment, achieving R² > 0.999, reflecting their high accuracy in mapping the spatial distribution of cumulative subsidence. SHAP analysis of both tree-based models identified transmissivity as the most influential spatial predictor of land subsidence(a finding that is physically consistent with the hydrogeological principles governing consolidation).
Analysis of the error distribution in the deep model revealed that the greatest prediction bias occurs during summer and autumn months, coinciding with peak groundwater extraction for agricultural use, and is most pronounced at points located in the central and southern portions of the aquifer where cumulative subsidence exceeds 200 mm. These findings demonstrate that by integrating radar interferometric data with deep memory-based algorithms, an effective framework can be established for early warning and preventive management of groundwater resources in alluvial aquifers. The accuracy of this framework can be further enhanced through expansion of the piezometric monitoring network and the incorporation of supplementary geotechnical data.
