Compilation of a Dictionary of Persian Colloquial Words an‎d Expressions in selec‎ted Works of Ahmad Mahmoud (Novel Collection)

Colloquial language constitutes an important component of the cultural an‎d social identity of every society. In literary works, it serves not only as a means of conveying meaning but also plays a significant role in characterization, the creation of setting, an‎d the representation of indigenous culture. Ahmad Mahmoud, one of the most prominent contemporary realist writers, made extensive use of spoken language an‎d colloquial words an‎d expressions to present a vivid representation of the life an‎d culture of the people, particularly those of southern Iran. Despite the significance of this linguistic feature, a comprehensive lexicographic compilation of the colloquial vocabulary an‎d expressions used in his works has not yet been developed. Accordingly, the present study aimed to compile a dictionary of Persian colloquial words an‎d expressions found in three selec‎ted novels by Ahmad Mahmoud: The Neighbors (Hamsāyeh-hā), A City Story (Dāstān-e Yek Shahr), an‎d The Fig Tree of the Temples (Derakht-e Anjīr-e Ma‘ābed). The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach based on documentary research. The data were collected through the systematic extraction of colloquial words an‎d expressions from the selec‎ted novels an‎d were subsequently organized an‎d analyzed according to alphabetical order, meaning, phonetic transcription where necessary, thematic domain, an‎d linguistic function. In total, 2,108 entries comprising colloquial words an‎d expressions were extracted an‎d documented from the selec‎ted works. The findings indicated that the highest concentration of expressions occurred in the domains of family an‎d social relationships, emotions an‎d affective states, an‎d work an‎d livelihood. From the perspective of linguistic function, idiomatic an‎d figurative expressions accounted for the highest frequency. The findings further demonstrated that colloquial language in Ahmad Mahmoud’s works functions as more than merely a linguistic resource; it plays a significant role in representing social realities, constructing characters, conveying emotions, creating literary settings, an‎d reconstructing the indigenous culture of southern Iran. Consequently, colloquial language can be regarded as one of the major stylistic features of Mahmoud’s realist fiction. The principal contribution of the present study is the compilation of a dictionary of colloquial vocabulary an‎d expressions found in Ahmad Mahmoud’s selec‎ted works. This compilation can serve as a valuable reference for future research in lexicography, sociolinguistics, dialectology, contemporary fiction, an‎d the study of popular culture an‎d folklore.
