This study examines the views of Hāj Muḥammad Karīm Khān Kermānī, one of the leading figures of the Shaykhī school, regarding Imamate. The main objective of this research is to elucidate his intellectual system on this topic, with particular emphasis on its distinctive theological and ontological foundations.
Employing a descriptive–analytical method and drawing upon Kermānī’s principal works, this research analyzes the position the Imamate within his doctrinal framework. One of the key foundations of Kermānī’s thought is his formulation of the Four Pillars of Faith (Arkān al-Arbaʿa), which replaces the well-known five principles of belief. According to this framework, faith is based on four pillars: knowledge of God, knowledge of the Prophet, knowledge of the Imam, and allegiance and dissociation (tawallī and tabarrī). Within this structure, Imamate, as the third pillar, is interpreted not only as a continuation of the prophetic mission but also as possessing an ontological and cosmological status.
According to the findings of this study, Kermānī regards the Imam as the perfect manifestation of the Muhammadan Reality, the mediator of divine grace, and—within the framework of the theory of the four causes—the final and efficient cause of the created order. From his perspective, Imamate is a divinely designated and ordained matter that cannot be determined through consultation or popular choice; accordingly, the Imam is conceived as the central axis of religious knowledge and the sustaining principle of the cosmic order.
The study further explores the implications of the theory of Imamate in Kermānī’s thought. Among these implications is the redefinition of the hierarchy of knowledge and authority, in which walāya (spiritual authority) is regarded as the fundamental principle and essential condition for true knowledge. Moreover, this perspective leads to an organization of society based on hierarchical distinctions between the “speaking” and the “silent,” as well as the articulation of a hierarchy of human perfection structured upon the ranks of nuqabāʾ, nujabāʾ, and arkān. Within this framework, the Fourth Pillar (al-Rukn al-Rābiʿ) acquires a structural role in ensuring the continuity of guidance throughout the period of occultation.
In conclusion, this research demonstrates that in the thought of Hāj Muḥammad Karīm Khān Kermānī, Imamate is not understood merely as a socio-religious form of leadership, but rather as a level of the manifestation of divine walāya and a indispensable link connecting creation to the Creator. The implications of this conception affect both epistemological considerations and the organization of society, as well as the delineation of the path toward human perfection.
