Education across different stages of schooling is one of the most important periods in students’ lives and can be accompanied by various psychological challenges and pressures. Academic stress, which arises from concerns and pressures related to assignments, examinations, family expectations, and the educational environment, can have a significant impact on students’ mental health and academic performance. One of the key factors in coping with academic stress is academic self-efficacy, which refers to an individual’s belief in their ability to succeed in educational activities. In this regard, an emerging approach such as mentalization-based counseling places particular emphasis on enhancing the cognitive and emotional capacities of students and parents. This capacity is influenced by various factors, and the family and its characteristics, as an influential institution in children’s development, constitute an important set of factors determining the level of mentalization capacity in adolescents. Given the theoretical importance of this component, the present study was designed and conducted to investigate the effect of mentalization-based counseling for parents and adolescents on reducing academic stress and increasing adolescents’ academic self-efficacy.
The study employed a single-case experimental design with a multiple-baseline-across-participants design. The statistical population consisted of upper-secondary school students in the academic year 2024–2025. Three students who had referred to a counseling center were voluntarily selected according to the inclusion criteria and were assessed during the baseline and intervention phases. The research instruments included the Owen and Froman Academic Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (1988) and the Zajacova Academic Stress Questionnaire (2005). All three participants completed the questionnaires at three baseline assessments, during the intervention at the third, sixth, and ninth sessions, and at three follow-up assessments. The intervention was conducted in 10 sessions at the counseling center. In one case, only the student received the intervention; in another, only the mother received the intervention; and in the third case, both the mother and the student received the intervention simultaneously.
The findings indicated that, based on visual analysis of the graphs and the indices of trend, stability, percentage of non-overlapping data, and percentage of overlapping data, mentalization-based counseling for the parent, the student, and both the parent and student was effective in reducing students’ academic stress. Furthermore, mentalization-based counseling for the parent and mentalization-based counseling for the student resulted in increased academic self-efficacy, whereas simultaneous mentalization-based counseling for the parent and student did not have a significant effect on academic self-efficacy. Overall, the findings of this study emphasize the effectiveness of mentalization-based counseling, particularly when the intervention is directed specifically toward the parent or adolescent, in reducing academic stress and improving adolescents’ academic self-efficacy.
