In this work, the structural, thermodynamic, and electronic properties of a series of bismuth-based compounds and alloys, including NaXYBi (X = S, Se, Te), KNa₂Bi, KTl₂Bi, and the alloys NaS₂ₓSe₂₋₂ₓBi and NaTe₂ₓSe₂₋₂ₓBi, are systematically investigated using first-principles calculations. To determine the stable phase, the total energy as a function of volume is calculated for both hexagonal and cubic crystal structures, considering magnetic and nonmagnetic states, with and without spin–orbit coupling. The results demonstrate that all studied systems are energetically more stable in the hexagonal structure and in the nonmagnetic phase, and that spin–orbit coupling plays a crucial role in accurately describing their stability. After optimizing the c/a ratio, the lattice parameters and bulk modulus are obtained, revealing a nonlinear dependence on the chemical composition.
Cohesive energy calculations further confirm the higher thermodynamic stability of the hexagonal structure compared to the cubic one. Analysis of the electronic density of states and band structures shows that all compounds and alloys behave as conventional semiconductors with an indirect band gap, where the states near the Fermi level are mainly contributed by the group-VI elements. The band gap exhibits a strong and nonlinear dependence on the alloy composition, indicating that it can be effectively tuned by chemical substitution. The effect of external pressure on the electronic properties is also examined, revealing a nonlinear pressure dependence of the band gap. However, no band inversion or topological phase transition is observed within the investigated pressure range. These findings indicate that the studied alloys possess robust electronic stability and tunable semiconducting properties, making them promising candidates for semiconductor and optoelectronic applications.
NaTe₂ₓSe₂₋₂ₓBi with varying x values (0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1) were investigated. The results indicate that the diagonal components of the dielectric tensor (xx and zz) play a dominant role in the optical properties, while the off-diagonal components have a negligible effect. Analysis of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric tensor shows that these alloys exhibit significant optical anisotropy in the energy range from 0 to approximately 7 eV, where the crystal orientation strongly influences the optical response, whereas at higher energies, the behavior becomes nearly isotropic.
Alloying with S and Te has opposite effects on the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric tensor: increasing S in NaS₂ₓSe₂₋₂ₓBi reduces the real part and shifts the peaks to higher energies, while increasing Te in NaTe₂ₓSe₂₋₂ₓBi enhances the real part and shifts the peaks to lower energies. These changes demonstrate precise control over optical properties and electronic polarizability through alloy composition engineering.
Analysis of reflectivity and absorption coefficients reveals that optical anisotropy is more pronounced at low energies and diminishes at higher energies, and the peak positions vary with chemical composition and applied pressure. Pressure significantly affects the height and position of the peaks, the intensity of electronic transitions, and the optical anisotropy, providing a means to tune the optical characteristics.
These findings indicate that chemical composition and pressure are effective tools for controlling and engineering the optical and electronic properties of Bi-based alloys with group VI elements, providing a scientific basis for designing materials with directional optical responses for applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and optical sensing devices.
