The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Scale (CDMAS) and the Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Response Scale (CDMARS) among Generation Z university students. This study employed a descriptive-correlational design and falls within the category of psychometric research. The target population consisted of Generation Z students (aged 18–28 years) enrolled at the University of Isfahan during the 2025–2026 academic year. The total student population of the university during this period was 16,847. Based on Klein recommendation regarding the minimum sample size required for psychometric studies, a sample of 307 students (192 females and 115 males) was selected using proportionate stratified sampling according to gender and academic disciplines (humanities, basic sciences, and engineering). The instruments used in this study included the Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Scale, the Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Response Scale, the Career Indecision Profile-Short-5 , the Academic Major Satisfaction Scale, the Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale-II, the Vocational Undecidedness Scale, and the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis for the Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Scale supported a well-fitting first-order unidimensional model after removing two items (Items 6 and 8). Convergent validity was demonstrated through significant positive correlations with the dimensions of the Career Indecision Profile, including Negative Affect (r = .23, p < .01), Choice/Commitment Anxiety (r = .39, p < .01), Need for Information (r = .32, p < .01), and Interpersonal Conflicts (r = .24, p < .01). Discriminant validity was supported by a significant negative correlation with Academic Major Satisfaction (r = −.17, p < .01). Furthermore, the scale demonstrated incremental validity, predicting career indecision beyond the effects of need for information and career decision-making self-efficacy (ΔR² = .22 and .13, respectively, p < .0001). The reliability coefficients for the total scale were .82 for both Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega. The confirmatory factor analysis of the Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Response Scale supported a well-fitting first-order four-factor model. Convergent validity was evidenced by positive correlations between the Tolerance, Preference, and Confidence factors and Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy (r = .21, .30, and .63, respectively; p < .01), while the Avoidance factor was positively correlated with Career Indecision (r = .38, p < .01). Discriminant validity was demonstrated through negative correlations between the Preference and Confidence factors and Career Indecision (r = −.26 and −.41, respectively; p < .01), as well as between the Avoidance factor and Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy (r = −.30, p < .01). The Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Response Scale also demonstrated incremental validity, predicting career decision-making outcomes beyond general ambiguity tolerance (ΔR² = .11, p < .0001). The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for the Preference, Tolerance, Confidence, and Avoidance subscales were .90, .74, .80, and .71. Overall, the findings indicate that both the Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Scale and the Career Decision-Making Ambiguity Response Scale possess satisfactory validity and reliability among Iranian Generation Z university students. Given the increasing importance of ambiguity in the career development of Generation Z students and the demonstrated psychometric soundness of these instruments, their use is recommended in future career-related research. In addition, university counseling centers and career development centers may benefit from employing these scales in practice.
