Recognition of the Structure an‎d Purpose of Surah Yasin Through the Analysis of Its Core Themes

Surah Yasin is one of the significant an‎d distinguished chapters of the Holy Qur’an, holding a prominent position in both exegetical an‎d narrational traditions. It has consistently been regarded by commentators an‎d scholars as the “essense of the Qur’an”. This surah, through a coherent an‎d harmonized combination of the themes of Tawḥīd (Divine Unity), Nubuwwah (Prophethood), Imamah (Leadership), Ma‘ād (Resurrection), an‎d ‘Adl (Divine Justice), provides a strategic an‎d practical model for guiding humanity an‎d realizing servitude to God. Despite its paramount importance, the overarching purpose of the surah has been less systematically an‎d rigorously explored in exegetical sources. The present thesis, entitled “Recognition of the Structure an‎d Purpose of Surah Yasin Through the Analysis of Its Core Themes”, aims to identify the core concepts, key vocabulary, expressions, an‎d verses of the surah, an‎d to extract its principal an‎d core purpose. The research employs a mixed methodological approach combining intra-textual analysis, logical reasoning, an‎d structural exegesis, utilizing both narrational an‎d exegetical sources to examine the thematic segmentation of the surah an‎d the interrelations among its verses. The analysis of core an‎d key terms, including Mursal, Indhār, Ittibā‘, Dhikr, Imām, Mubīn, Īmān, Shafā‘ah, ‘Ubūdiyyah, Amr, Yad, an‎d Mulkūt, plays a decisive role in shaping the structural framework an‎d representing the surah’s purpose. Furthermore, historical examples of the faithful, supporters, an‎d defenders of the prophets, including Habīb Najjār (rajulun yas‘ā–YāSīn/20), Ḥezqīl (rajulun yas‘ā–Qaṣṣ/20), an‎d Amīr al-Mu’minīn ʿAlī ibn AbīṬālib (imām mubīn–YāSīn/12), exemplify the practical manifestation of these concepts in the realization of the surah’s purpose. This study, emphasizing the structural coherence of the surah an‎d the interconnection of Imamah with Ma‘ād an‎d ‘Adl, as well as the linkage of Wilayah an‎d Shafā‘ah under the light of Tawḥīd an‎d Nubuwwah, presents a coherent, substantiated, an‎d systematic representation of the purpose of Surah Yasin. Such a representation facilitates the utilization of its structural an‎d thematic analysis in Qur’anic exegetical studies.
