A comparative study of the manifestation of psychological complexes in the novels of “Delusion” Najib Mahfouz an‎d “Suitcase” Bozorg Alavi

This thesis, as an academic study in the field of comparative literature, conducts a psychological analysis of two significant works of contemporary literature: Naguib Mahfouzʹs novel The Mirage (Al-Sarab) an‎d Bozorg Alaviʹs novel The Suitcase (Chamedan). Focusing on psychological complexes in the characters of these two works—particularly the "Oedipus complex"—this research seeks to highlight the social an‎d cultural influences of the Arab an‎d Persian societies reflected in these narratives. In this study, other psychological issues such as identity crisis, family breakdown, depression, an‎d the inability to form emotional relationships are also examined. Through the analysis of the main characters in these two novels, the relationship between individual psychology an‎d the social problems represented in these works is explored. In the comparative section, the research attempts to analyze the similarities an‎d differences between the Arab an‎d Persian societies within their respective historical an‎d cultural contexts. The study demonstrates how Naguib Mahfouz an‎d Bozorg Alavi have managed to portray human psychology under the influence of their social environments, creating characters that reflect the problems an‎d tensions present in their societies. The main objective of this research is not only to examine psychological complexes in these two works but also to reveal how these complexes serve as indicators of psychological an‎d social issues within two distinct cultures. The research also shows how both authors, through their unique styles, have been able to establish a connection between individual psychology an‎d social issues while leaving a lasting impact on their respective literary traditions .
