“Ma’ani” (Meanings) is a seminal work by Sirus Shamisa، first published in 1993. Recognized as a cornerstone in the field of rhetoric، this book، despite its significant stan‎ding in Persian literature، necessitates a rigorous editorial review. The current thesis، titled “A Critical Examination of Sirus Shamisa’s ‘Ma’ani’ from Formal an‎d Content Perspectives،” undertakes a comprehensive analysis an‎d critique of this important text. “Ma’ani” has long been a subject of academic attention an‎d a stan‎dard educational resource for rhetoric. However، in common with many scholarly an‎d literary works، it exhibits deficiencies across various editorial levels. Recognizing that the editorial refinement of academic an‎d literary texts is paramount to elevating research quality، this thesis meticulously scrutinizes an‎d critiques the formal an‎d substantive shortcomings of Shamisa’s book. Specifically، formal issues such as inconsistent punctuation an‎d grammatical errors، alongside content-related problems including ambiguous definitions of rhetorical terms an‎d the adequacy of supporting examples، have been identified an‎d discussed. The analysis revealed the most pronounced issues within the sections on ‘Kalam’ (discourse/speech)، general principles، an‎d introductory concepts in the first chapter، although such shortcomings appear throughout the volume. While the second edition of the fifth printing (published in 2022) shows improvements in aspects like the correct use of the “half-space” (a typographic convention) an‎d punctuation، the majority of the original issues remain، underscoring the book’s continued need for thorough scholarly editing.
