Analysis an‎d eva‎luation of Yilfred Madelungʹs view on the place of Taqiyyah in the history of Shiite political an‎d social developments

Taqiyyah is one of the important concepts in Shia that has played a decisive role in the formation of the identity of the Shia religion throughout history. This concept has been the subject of discussion by many Western researchers. Among these Western researchers, Wilfred Madelong, a German Islamologist, has a special place. The importance of critiquing an‎d examining Madelongʹs view is that he is considered one of the most influential figures in Western Shia studies. This perception has been criticized by many Shia scholars an‎d researchers, who emphasize that Madelong has neglected the historical an‎d Quranic concept of taqiyyah by placing too much emphasis on external political factors. The question is, "What is Madelongʹs view on the place of taqiyyah in Shia political an‎d social developments? an‎d how is it eva‎luated?" The present study attempts to explore this issue with a historical study approach an‎d descriptive, analytical, an‎d documentary methods, an‎d by studying Madelongʹs works an‎d Islamic texts an‎d related research. The results indicate that although Madelong, like other orientalists, believes that the concept of taqiyyah should be viewed more from a political perspective, he has reached the aforementioned conclusion with different premises an‎d perspectives than other orientalists. With a scientific an‎d fair perspective, he introduces taqiyyah as one of the intellectual, historical, an‎d political pillars, an‎d unlike many orientalists, he introduces this concept as a rational an‎d religious measure to preserve life an‎d belief.
