This study explores the role of extended noun phrases in non-structural cohesion an‎d their significance in enhancing creative writing, based on Michael Halliday’s theory of non-structural cohesion. Drawing upon the systemic functional linguistics framework, the research emphasizes how meaning-based connections—rather than formal syntactic links—contribute to textual unity. Extended noun phrases, as complex nominal constructions, serve as semantic anchors that facilitate referential clarity an‎d conceptual continuity, thereby reinforcing the internal cohesion of a text. The research combines theoretical inquiry with empirical analysis. After examining Halliday’s functionalist approach an‎d the components of cohesion—particularly non-structural cohesion—texts produced by language learners were analyzed to assess the presence an‎d function of extended noun phrases. The findings reveal that learners who received targeted instruction on nominal expansion an‎d semantic cohesion demonstrated a marked improvement in their ability to produce coherent an‎d imaginative texts. These learners were more adept at organizing ideas, maintaining thematic consistency, an‎d expressing nuanced meanings. Ultimately, the study underscores the pedagogical value of teaching extended noun phrases an‎d non-structural cohesion as tools for developing writing proficiency. By fostering awareness of semantic relationships an‎d encouraging the use of elaborated nominal structures, educators can empower learners to construct texts that are not only grammatically sound but also conceptually rich an‎d creatively engaging. These insights advocate for a shift in writing instruction toward meaning-oriented strategies that prioritize cohesion beyond surface-level syntax.
