This thesis, through the examination of over 120 Quranic verses, investigates the concept of Mahdism in two prominent Shiite exegeses: Al-Mīzān by Allama Tabatabai and Al-Burhan by Allama Bahrani. Given the pivotal role of the Imam in guiding humanity and the importance of recognizing the Imam in Shiite thought, this study explores ten key concepts of Mahdism based on the interpretative perspectives of these two great exegetes.
Imamate, as one of the fundamental principles of Islam, holds a significant position in the Shiite belief system, with Mahdism representing its culmination in the existence of a living Imam as the divine intermediary. The Holy Quran, through verses such as "The Day We call every people with their Imam" (Surah Al-Isra 17:71), underscores the necessity of the Imamʹs presence and his central role in individual and societal life. This research analyzes these verses and other Quranic and narrational evidence to delve into the epistemological and doctrinal foundations of Mahdism in the works of these exegetes.
The study compares the ten prominent concepts of Mahdism as presented in Al-Mīzān, which employs Allama Tabatabaiʹs rational and philosophical approach emphasizing divine knowledge and the ontological system of guidance, with Al-Burhan, which adopts Allama Bahraniʹs narrational and traditional approach focusing on specific and historical aspects of Mahdism.
Beginning with the necessity of the living Imam as the divine intermediary throughout all eras, the research examines the occultation of Imam al-Mahdi (aj) and its underlying philosophy, the concept of Intidhar al-Faraj (awaiting relief) as a spiritual strategy connecting believers to the Imam during his absence, the signs of reappearance, and the characteristics of Imam al-Mahdi’s (aj) companions, supported by Quranic exegeses. Furthermore, it elaborates on the emergence and uprising of Imam al-Mahdi (aj), his lofty goals in establishing global justice, Raj’a (return), as a divine promise to restore select individuals, and the formation of the global governance of Imam al-Mahdi (aj), emphasizing the Quranʹs supremacy and justice.
Employing a descriptive-analytical method grounded in Shiite exegeses and traditions, this study endeavors to present an accurate portrayal of Mahdism teachings in the Quran.
