The purpose of this research was to predict the level of Internet addiction based on distress tolerance, loneliness and coping flexibility and their subscales in Isfahan University students. The research design was descriptive and correlational. The statistical population included all students of Isfahan University in year 2023. Sampling was done with the available method and it contained 310 people. Research data were collected online, through Youngʹs internet addiction questionnaire, Simmons and Gaherʹs distress tolerance questionnaire, social and emotional loneliness - short version by Di Tommaso et al., and Katoʹs coping flexibility.
The results of the regression analysis in SPSS-27 showed that among the investigated variables, in the first step, the absorption subscale of distress tolerance alone was able to predict 18.6% of the variannce of internet addiction scores; In the second, third, and fourth step, family loneliness of loneliness, evaluation coping of coping flexibility, and tolerance of distress tolerance were entered into the regression equation, which respectively predicted 4.6, 2.4, and 1.1% of the variation of internet addiction scores. These four variables in total were able to predict 26.6% of the varitation of internet addiction scores (p<0.05) .
The results indicated that students who show less distress tolerance, more loneliness and inflexible coping are more likely to be at risk of Internet addiction. Therefore, it is suggested that in the interventions related to Internet addiction, attention should be paid to increasing the acceptance and tolerance of distress, processing family relationships and the feeling of loneliness of people in the family environment, as well as strengthening the ability to evaluate their coping methods, and in future studies to consider these variables.
