Abstract
This dissertation studied the Serial Verb Construction (SVC) in Persian within the framework Role & Reference Grammar (RRG). The most important goal of this dissertation is to determine the types of juncture-nexus relations in the serial verb construction. Based on Aikhenvald, an asymmetrical serial verb construction consists of a verb from unrestricted(open) class and a verb from restricted(close) class. In the Persian language, complex predicates consists of verbs “take, remove, return, go, come, enter, hit, have” and the main verb were the basis of data selection due to their form similar with the asymmetrical serial verb construction. To do so, first research data were collected from Najafi Persian Dictionary, Persian language database, storybook, sites and other research works. Then, they were analyzed based on the criteria of serial verb construction from Aikhenvald point of view.
This dissertation aims to answer three basic and important questions: 1-Which of the juncture levels (nuclear, core, clause) is observed in the serial verb construction in Persian language, based on the RRG? 2-What is the interclausal relations hierarchy in the serial verb construction in Persian language, based on RRG?3-How to make explain serial verb construction in Persian language, based on RRG?
The findings indicate that the serial verb construction inPersian language based on the semantic relation, has two phase and motion construction, which the phase construction has three types: inchoative, continuous and approximate, as wellasths construction in Persian language has four types of juncture-nexus, based on the interclausal relations hierarchy: ad-nuclear subordination, nuclear subordination, nuclear co-subordination and nuclear coordination. The inchoative phasal has ad-nuclear subordination, the continuous phasal has nuclear subordination and nuclear co-subordination, the approximate phasal has nuclear subordination and the motion construction has nuclear coordination.
