The long shadow of literature has always extended over other arts, sometimes veiling their essence due to its vast influence. Yet, literature has equally elevated various art forms toward a kind of transcendence. Prominent filmmakers in Iranian cinema have consistently drawn upon great works of world literature to create their films, often resulting in successful and effective collaborations between literary and cinematic works. However, in some cases, inherent differences between these two art forms emerge, necessitating solutions to overcome their intrinsic distinctions.
The first step lies in crafting an adapted screenplay, which has its own conventions and principles. This process is so significant that most specialized festivals and award ceremonies dedicate a separate prize for it. To gain a deeper understanding, five prominent Iranian films adapted from valuable works of world literature were examined and analyzed in various aspects. These analyses aid in understanding issues such as: how to write an adapted screenplay, the differences in dialogue writing between literature and cinema, how to create an atmosphere by drawing on the adapted literary work while employing a distinct cinematic language, and more.
Studying these films and their source materials from different perspectives provided answers to critical questions, such as: Is it possible to create a work that remains entirely faithful to its source? or why have many cinematic adaptations of great literary works failed to succeed? These explorations were illuminating, akin to uncovering unknowns in a new journey. The critique and analysis of these works, along with the differing perspectives and worldviews of their creators, sometimes led to critical and negative viewpoints, at other times to analytical and detail-oriented perspectives, and occasionally to explanations of the reasons behind the lack of success in the vision or execution of a cinematic adaptation. Nonetheless, the effort to unveil certain truths about the value and place of literature and the possibilities of cinematic language in utilizing it culminated in the present collection. Through comparative analysis, this study seeks to enhance understanding and facilitate accurate readings of these works in the realm of critique and analysis.
