The Effect of Peer Firm Performance on Conditional Conservatism: The Moderating Role of Corporate Governance, Information Asymmetry an‎d Managerial Ability

Existing literature in the peer effect domain indicates that the performance of peer firms can influence the financial reporting attributes of the focal firm, including conditional conservatism. When peer firms have weak performance, weak corporate governance an‎d high information asymmetry create greater opportunities for managers to conceal bad news, thereby increasing the deman‎d for conditional conservatism. Additionally, managerial ability influences managersʹ incentives to align with peer firms’ bad news disclosure. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of weak peer firm’s performance on conditional conservatism an‎d also to examine the effect of corporate governance, information asymmetry, an‎d management ability on this relationship. In line with the study objectives, four hypotheses were developed. The first hypothesis examines the effect of weak peer performance on conditional conservatism. The second, third, an‎d fourth hypotheses examine the role of corporate governance, information asymmetry, an‎d management ability on the relationship between weak peer performance an‎d conditional conservatism. Using the screening method, a sample including data from 137 companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange during the period 1392 to 1402 was selec‎ted. The required data were extracted from the Rahavard Novin software an‎d the Codal website. To test the hypotheses, a multivariate regression model an‎d a mixed data method were used, controlling for the effects of year an‎d industry. The results of this study showed that the weak peer performance has a positive an‎d significant effect on conditional conservatism. Also, corporate governance weakens the effect of the weak peer performance on conditional conservatism, while management ability strengthens the effect of the weak peer performance on conditional conservatism. In addition, the results of this study showed that information asymmetry does not have a significant effect on the impact of the weak peer performance on conditional conservatism.
