Abstract
The delineation of how individualsʹ political relations with the political system usually engenders some form of duality and contradiction between their actions and thoughts; however, in academic discussions, a unified pattern that comprehensively examines the role and impact of all influential factors in managing the mentioned contradiction has not been presented, and a clear theoretical explanation has not been provided. The current thesis aims to elucidate the sociological understanding of the contradiction between individualsʹ actions and thoughts through an examination of their ideological system regarding the phenomenon of contradiction. The research method is of a combined type and utilizes a sequential exploratory strategy. In the qualitative stage of the research, the interview method (grounded theory) was employed, and in the quantitative stage, the survey method was used. The data collection tool in the qualitative stage was semi-structured interviews, and to gather information, interviews were conducted with 30 postgraduate students of Isfahan University. Data analysis was performed in three stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The results of the current research indicate the extraction of over 170 codes or primary concepts from the interviews, as well as the identification of 32 sub-themes and 5 main themes for investigating the reasons for the contradiction between citizensʹ political thoughts and behaviors as the main phenomenon and its Causal conditions (democratic weakness), contextual conditions (cultural weakness and nationalism), intervening conditions (hope for a better future and loyalty to the system), strategies, and post-phenomenal factors related to the main phenomenon. The studied community consists of students in the city of Isfahan. The sample size in the quantitative stage is 250 individuals. The sampling method in the qualitative stage is theoretical saturation, and in the quantitative stage, it is cluster sampling. For data analysis in the quantitative stage, the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was used. The findings of the quantitative stage of the research indicate that the average of the contradiction variable in the statistical community of the research is higher than the average. The independent variables of the research have a relatively high potential to explain the contradiction variable, and in the empirical model of the research, the effect of political distrust on contradiction is positive and significant at the 0.001 level. The variables of democracy, loyalty to the system, and hope for a better future have a significant and negative effect on political distrust. and the variables of non-modern culture and national identity do not have a significant effect on political distrust.
