Metaphor is widely considered a mental phenomenon central to human knowledge. Its study has become an important area of research, examining its relationship with the mind and human cognition, as well as its connection to linguistic and non-linguistic expressions. This study explores one of the contemporary cognitive theories focused on reinterpreting "Dead Metaphors" and unveiling their cognitive roles. It aims to present these ideas in a new light, emerging from cognitive science, and reflecting the growing global interest in this theory. The study will focus on the mental mechanisms the human mind uses to engage in cognitive functions within this broad framework.
Raad Zamel Al-Maysaniʹs poetry offers a rich exploration of cognitive or conceptual metaphors through semiotic signs that resonate with everyday life. His work is significant due to its deep, layered meaning, extending beyond the present moment to engage with the spiritual history of the text. The coherence, interaction, and harmony of his poems create metaphors that evolve through the blending of these elements, enriching the text’s meaning and contributing to its overall harmony. The topic, "The Conceptual Metaphor in Contemporary Iraqi poetry; (Raad Zamil) as a model) Cognitive Linguistic Approach (", was chosen because conceptual metaphors represent a modern theory that accumulates interpretive displacement, producing a rich language rooted in everyday life. This theory gives the text a unique depth, creating an organic unity in the poetic expression.
This study analyzes Raad Zamelʹs poetry collections using an analytical and descriptive approach, alongside a statistical method, to explore the use of conceptual metaphors in Iraqi poetry based on the Western theory of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. The analysis highlights the poetʹs use of nature to convey meaning, decoding the symbolic mystery within the natural world to unlock the deeper layers of the text.
Among the key findings, cognitive metaphors emerge as one of the most fertile and abundant aspects of Raad Zamel’s poetry, serving as a model for contemporary Iraqi poetry. The poet utilizes his procedural tools to rejuvenate the process of decoding the text, uncovering the poetic features repressed under its suffocating silence. His works are filled with significant metaphorical expressions, rooted in everyday life, and align with modern cognitive theory of metaphors. These metaphors, characterized by effective cohesion, are evident from the internal title of the poem to the external title of the poetry collection, which serves as the head of the body. Key metaphors in his works, such as "tree," "fish," "river," and "storm," reflect the crises faced by the poet and his people at the time. Zamelʹs talent lies in his ability to blend words and concepts, mixing themes of war and hunger, political cunning and love, creating a unique narrative.
Ontological metaphors are prominent in his work, including diagnostic, vascular, entity, and material metaphors, as well as directional and structural metaphors. These metaphors carry political, economic, religious, cultural, and social meanings, reflecting the poetʹs response to the siege, famine, war, political oppression, and cultural invasion during that period.
