One of the important issues of marriage in Islam is the dowry (mahr). In the Quran, dowry is referred to as "sadaq" and "nahlah." This research, conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, aims to address three main questions regarding the issue of dowry in the verses of the Quran and their interpretations: first, the status of dowry; second, the amount of dowry; and third, the manner of receiving it. The findings of this study indicate that, concerning the status of dowry, according to the Quran and its interpretations, contrary to what some claim, dowry is not a payment for a manʹs sexual gratification, a guarantee for a womanʹs (wifeʹs) livelihood, or a means of pressure against the man (husband). Rather, dowry serves as a factor for strengthening marriage and is a type of gift and a sign of the manʹs (husbandʹs) sincerity and honesty towards his wife. In the second matter, the Quran and interpreters have not set a minimum or maximum limit for the amount of dowry. However, in todayʹs societal customs, heavy dowries based on gold and large amounts of gold coins are detrimental to husbands and lead to hardship and punishment for financially struggling couples, which contradicts Quranic teachings. Possible solutions to this problem include determining the dowry based on the husband’s reasonable income or established laws within a specified timeframe (maximum of ten years). The final issue concerns how to receive the dowry. According to the command of the Holy Quran, if the husband is financially capable, the wife can fully request and receive her dowry from him; if he is in financial difficulty, he should be given time.
