Technology and the cyberspace have increasingly become dominant and have created enormous changes in various political, social, economic, and cultural aspects of of human life. As fourth generation of the web, the metaverse,, is in its infancy but has had important implications for international relations from the very beginning. The most important areas affected by the metaverse are: international power and security, diplomacy, international political economy, government, and international organizations. The main question raised in this research is what impact the metaverse has on the digitalization of international relations and the aforementioned areas. To answer this question, the conceptual framework of the role of technology on the nature of international relations and descriptive-analytical methodology have been used. The research findings show that: In the field of power and security, the metaverse leads to the redistribution of power, the increasing competition of great powers for influence and dominance over the metaverse, the intensification of terrorist group activities, the erosion of the traditional sovereignty of states, the further blurring of geographical borders, the increase in the power of non-state actors, and changes in military tactics and strategies. The expansion of metaverse diplomacy helps reduce diplomatic costs, resolve disputes about the location of negotiations, reduce environmental pollution, continue diplomacy in times of crisis, overcome language barriers, facilitate diplomatic missions, and provide specialized training for diplomats. The metaverse is profoundly affecting key areas of international political economy, including international trade and finance, through greater electronization. This has both negative and positive effects on North-South relations. Governments in the metaverse need a functional redefinition and if they do not keep up with the developments in the metaverse, they will be left behind in competition with non-state actors. However, the metaverse will lead to further erosion of state sovereignty and further loss of time and space. International organizations, due to their traditional structures, also need to enter the metaverse space to advance their goals, accelerate the decision-making process, and reduce costs, and they have more or less started this path. The combination of these developments has caused international relations to experience a new wave of more intense digitalization and its nature to change. The findings of this study indicate that the metaverse, as a rapidly emerging technology, presents both significant opportunities and challenges for international relations. On one hand, it has the potential to serve as a catalyst for international cooperation, global trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange. On the other hand, it poses challenges for governments regarding security, privacy, and the preservation of national and local cultures, underscoring the need for the development of regulatory frameworks to govern this virtual space.
