This study aims to identify and analyze the challenges associated with the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies in Esfahanʹs Mobarakeh Steel Company, with a focus on the maintenance and repair sector. Utilizing scientific methods and a combination of qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques, including Fuzzy Delphi, Best-Worst Method (BWM), and Quality Function Deployment (QFD), this research seeks to identify and prioritize key obstacles in the path of digital transformation and propose effective and practical strategies to overcome them.
The findings reveal that challenges such as outdated and inefficient infrastructure, high costs and the need for substantial investments, a shortage of skilled workforce, restrictions imposed by international sanctions, the complexity of the supply chain, and cybersecurity concerns are among the primary barriers to implementing Industry 4.0 technologies in this sector. These challenges are categorized into nine dimensions, including technical, human, economic, cultural, and security-related barriers. Subsequently, 13 key strategies have been identified and proposed to address these challenges. These strategies include the localization of technologies, developing a digital transformation roadmap, promoting Industry 4.0 culture across all organizational levels, conducting pilot implementations on a smaller scale, leveraging artificial intelligence for process management and optimization, and establishing a network connecting universities, research centers, and industries. These strategies have been analyzed using the Quality Function Deployment matrix to evaluate their impact on mitigating the identified challenges.
The results of this research provide practical and actionable solutions that can serve as a roadmap for managers, policymakers, and decision-makers in the steel industry to accelerate digital transformation, enhance productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability in this strategic sector. Furthermore, the findings and methodology of this study offer a valuable foundation for future research on emerging technologies and their associated challenges.
