In Afghanistan, editing is not widely recognized as a specialized profession or a practical field, and editorial knowledge is not considered a distinct academic discipline. Although editors are employed in various publications, including books and periodicals, many lack the necessary expertise to engage in specialized editing. As a result, editing in Afghanistan is often limited to surface-level aspects such as formal editing, orthography, and typographical corrections, with little attention given to deeper layers like linguistic and content editing. Additionally, access to Iranian editing and writing reference books has not always been feasible for Afghan editors, limiting their ability to utilize these resources.
Therefore, this research aims to establish a scientific approach and standardize editing guidelines for specialized books in Afghanistan by analyzing and comparing editing practices in Iran and Afghanistan. Among eight key Afghan reference books on editing and writing, five were selected and compared with five authoritative Iranian reference books. Ultimately, the study included five Afghan books and four Iranian books for critical analysis.
This research employs descriptive, analytical, and critical methods to identify differences, divergences, and similarities between selected Afghan and Iranian reference books, providing logical and well-reasoned solutions for existing challenges. The findings reveal significant differences: in Afghanistan, editing is not approached systematically or scientifically. Among the three main types of editing, only technical editing—covering punctuation, documentation, numerical formatting, phonetic characteristics, the writing style of "hamza," spacing, word segmentation, spelling of certain Arabic words, possessive pronouns, copular verbs, and the differentiation of pronounced and silent "h"—is addressed, albeit incompletely. In contrast, the selected Iranian books demonstrate a more specialized, scientific, and comprehensive approach to editing, categorizing editorial knowledge and addressing various types of editing in depth.
