"The development of communication infrastructures, especially in the field of transportation, is recognized as one of the fundamental requirements for economic and commercial growth in today’s globalized world. The unique geographical location of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a communication bridge between Asia and Europe, places the country in a strategic position to take advantage of transit routes. In this regard, this research examines the role and importance of the North-South Corridor, as one of the most important transit routes passing through Iranian territory, within the framework of China’s “Belt and Road Initiative.” The main goal of this research is to analyze the economic and political opportunities resulting from the activation of this corridor for the I.R.I.
The main question of this research explores “What opportunities can the North-South Corridor offer for the economic and political development of the I.R.I. within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative?” To address this question, this research analyzes the routes of the North-South Corridor for the I.R.I. The independent variable of this study is the North-South Corridor, and the dependent variables are the political and economic causes affecting the formation of this corridor in the I.R.I., as well as the consequences of its formation in the country.
In the theoretical framework, Schuller’s neoclassical realism theory is used as an analytical tool. According to this theory, regional powers strive to use geographical capacities to achieve greater benefits. Using a descriptive-analytical method and relying on library studies, documents, and reputable resources, this research examines the significance of the North-South Corridor in the economic and political development of the I.R.I. The findings of the research indicate that by completing the railway and road routes of this corridor, the I.R.I. can benefit from significant revenues from the transit of goods.
Ultimately, this research demonstrates that the North-South Corridor, as part of the “Belt and Road Initiative,” provides numerous opportunities for the economic and political development of the I.R.I. These opportunities include increasing foreign exchange revenues, developing transportation infrastructure, strengthening trade and political relations with countries in the region, and reducing geo-economic isolation. Activating this corridor not only helps the I.R.I. to make the best use of its geographical location, but will also help to strengthen the country’s position in regional and international equations."
