Research related to the meaning of life is one of the most important human questions. This issue has been raised as a fundamental question in the history of philosophy. The purpose of this research is to criticize and evaluate Viktor Franklʹs point of view regarding the meaning of life according to the teachings of Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) in Nahj al-Balaghah with a descriptive-comparative method. Frankel is the founder of the school of logotherapy (meaning therapy), which in this school has tried to teach people to try to find the meaning of their lives, to get rid of the damage of existential vacuum and not to consider life as meaningless and absurd. From Frankelʹs point of view, meaning in human life is a discoverable and real category. Also, in his view, Frankel emphasizes the role of theism in religion.
In this research, through the letters, sermons, and aphorisms of Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him) in Nahj al-Balaghe, we criticize Viktor Franklʹs view. And we express the similarities and differences of these two views. The results of this research show that the meaningful components of life from the perspective of Amir al-Mominin Ali, peace be upon him, are: belief in this world and the hereafter, death, belief in God, purposefulness of life, moral values, suffering and work. In Viktor Franklʹs opinion, the most important sources of meaning in life are: work, love and suffering.
Therefore, the fundamental difference between Frankelʹs view and the teachings of Nahj al-Balaghah is that from the perspective of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, the most important sources of meaning in life are: being purposeful and believing in this world and the hereafter, and believing in moral values and believing in God.
