Libraries of the future will be vastly different from what we see today. The concept of the smart library could serve as a new and fitting name for them. A smart library represents an option for staying relevant and safeguarding the essential assets of libraries within the future smart society. The main aim of this research is to design a conceptual model of the smart library. Additionally, it seeks to explain the concept of the smart library, identify its dimensions and elements based on a literature review, and prioritize these dimensions and elements based on expert opinions. In this research, a documentary research method was used to conceptually explain the smart library. For identifying the dimensions and elements of the smart library based on the literature review, the meta-synthesis method was employed. Furthermore, the Delphi method and semi-structured interviews were utilized to prioritize the dimensions and elements. After identifying these dimensions and elements, a conceptual model of the smart library was drawn and presented to experts for validation. The statistical population for the conceptual explanation of the smart library included 1300 articles identified in the citation databases Scopus, Web of Science, and the databases ScienceDirect, Springer, Wiley, Emerald, IEEE, Taylor & Francis, ProQuest, EBSCO, JSTOR, SAGE, ACM, and ERIC, of which 78 articles were ultimately analyzed. The statistical population for the meta-synthesis method included 1800 scientific documents related to the smart library retrieved from reputable scientific databases without time and language restrictions. After removing duplicate and unrelated titles, 194 articles were ultimately analyzed to identify the dimensions and components of the smart library. The content analysis of texts was performed using MaxQDA software. For identifying and prioritizing the dimensions and elements of the smart library, 20 individuals were selected. Finally, the model was presented to 5 experts for validation. The research results indicated a significant increase in the number of articles in the field of smart libraries in recent years. Given that the smart library is a new research area and an evolving concept, many definitions of this concept have been proposed, and individuals have approached it from different perspectives. The results also showed that in our country, little attention has been paid to the concept of the smart library. The findings from the meta-synthesis phase revealed that the dimensions of smart libraries include technology, services, people, resources, location, governance and management, legal, ethical, social, cultural, and political issues, as well as innovation and creativity. Although technology is the main driver and infrastructure of the smart library, it should be noted that in designing and implementing a smart library, the needs, available facilities and equipment, and the required budget must be considered. Each library may have different needs and resources that should be taken into account. Consequently, the implementation of smart libraries requires a multi-dimensional approach that encompasses various key components. It is noteworthy that the priorities and needs of each library determine which types of technologies, services, resources, or environments to utilize, and which aspects of the smart library to focus on, given the limitations of budget and human resources.
